In an article published by Reuters, the court’s decision stems from a lawsuit filed by the Public Ministry of the State of Minas Gerais. Prosecutors from MP-MG requested the company’s condemnation for engaging in corrupt practices and the obligation to fully repair damages caused by the dam’s rupture.
The billion-dollar amount had already been required in May of this year; however, Vale secured a preliminary injunction to suspend the decision. What was noted by mine prosecutors was that the amount required was the largest ever recognized in a court action of this nature in Brazil.
