The Construction of the Bridge Connecting Estreito to Aguiarnópolis Advanced to 90% Completion and Is Expected to Be Delivered by the End of 2025, According to DNIT
The National Department of Infrastructure and Transport informed this Wednesday that the reconstruction of the Juscelino Kubitscheck Bridge has reached 90% completion. The structure connects Estreito, in Maranhão, to Aguiarnopólis, in Tocantins, along a stretch of BR-226.
The forecast is to complete the work by the end of 2025, although there is still no specific date for delivery. The reconstruction is taking place after the collapse registered in December 2024.
Structure of the New Bridge
The project provides for a crossing with an extension of 630 meters and a width of 19 meters, in addition to a clear span of 154 meters. The project receives an investment of R$ 171.1 million from the Federal Government. DNIT reported that the new bridge will have a system for monitoring deformations and vibrations.

The structure will feature two traffic lanes of 3.6 meters, two three-meter shoulders, New Jersey type protective barriers, and walkways for pedestrians with guardrails at the ends.
The Collapse of 2024
The collapse occurred on December 22, 2024, at the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge, built in the 1960s. The old structure was 533 meters long and also connected Estreito to Aguiarnópolis via BR-226.
The final report indicated that the collapse was caused by the deformation of the central span due to the excessive weight of vehicles. The collapse process lasted about 15 seconds, and the central span fell in less than one second.
Victims and Missing Persons
The accident left 14 dead. The Brazilian Navy reported that three people are still missing: Salmon Alves Santos, 65; Felipe Giuvannuci Ribeiro, 10; and Gessimar Ferreira da Costa, 38. Search efforts have been maintained following the incident, and the data remains updated according to official records.
