With 17 states bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Brazil gathers coastal strips with strong territorial, tourist, and economic weight, while another nine federative units remain landlocked, in a division that helps understand the occupation, hydrography, and regional diversity of the country.

Brazil has 17 coastal states, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and Bahia appears as the largest coastal strip in the country, with about 1,183 km of coastline in descending order.

What are coastal states

Coastal states are federative units that have an area connected to the maritime coast. In Brazil, this condition includes Bahia, Maranhão, Amapá, Pará, Paraná, Ceará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Sergipe, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo, and Piauí.

Meanwhile, non-coastal states are not bordered by the sea. This list includes Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Amazonas, Rondônia, Roraima, and Acre, in addition to the Federal District, which also has no coastline.

Bahia leads among coastal states

Bahia is pointed out as the state with the largest coastal extension in Brazil. The Bahian coastal strip gathers well-known beaches, such as Morro de São Paulo, Itacaré, Ilhéus, Porto Seguro, and Maraú.

The extension of the Brazilian coastline is indicated as 7,408 km, from Amapá to Rio Grande do Sul. The presence of the sea influences economic activities, movements, tourism, territorial occupation, and ways of using the coast.

List in descending order

In the order presented, Bahia leads with about 1,183 km of coastline. Next are Maranhão, with 640 km, Rio de Janeiro, with 636 km, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, both with 622 km.

The list continues with Amapá, 598 km; Ceará, 573 km; Pará, 562 km; Santa Catarina, 561 km; Espírito Santo, 411 km; Rio Grande do Norte, 410 km; Alagoas, 230 km; Pernambuco, 187 km; Sergipe, 163 km; Paraíba, 138 km; Paraná, 98 km; and Piauí, 66 km.

The coastal division is also organized into four zones: northern quaternary coast, eastern tertiary coast, southeastern coast, and southern quaternary coast. Bahia is associated with the eastern tertiary coastal strip.
