Nestlé Brasil And Enel Brasil Form Consortium For Wind Power Self-Generation, Reducing Carbon Emissions And Diversifying The Use Of Renewable Sources.

Nestlé Brasil and Enel Brasil have joined forces to form a consortium focused on self-generating wind energy. The partnership aims to ensure the supply for five factories located in the country. By forming three consortia at the Cumaru complex, managed by Enel Green Power in Rio Grande do Norte, both companies reinforce their commitment to sustainable solutions.

This collaboration between Nestlé Brasil and Enel Brasil results in the creation of structures capable of generating wind energy sufficient to support large-scale industrial operations. By investing in sources such as sustainable energy, the companies demonstrate a clear commitment to reducing carbon emissions. This move also reflects the growing importance of adopting green energy practices to tackle the environmental challenges of our time.

Introduction To The Wind Energy Partnership

The self-generation of wind energy will supply five manufacturing units of Nestlé Brasil. The wind farms, located in the Cumaru complex in Rio Grande do Norte, were developed and are operated by Enel Green Power, the renewable generation division of the Enel Group. Nestlé will have a 40% to 47% stake in the three wind farms.

We continuously work to improve our operations, aiming to prevent waste and conserve resources. Since the 1980s, Nestlé has utilized renewable energy in its factories, being a pioneer in the use of biomass – such as coffee grounds for steam generation. Since 2017, all factories have been powered by renewable electricity. Now, we intend to diversify our sources of green energy to advance the energy transition, aligning with the goal of becoming a NetZero company by 2050. Self-generation will also ensure greater cost stability due to predictable tariffs. Our commitment to sustainability continues, always innovating in this area.

Supplying Factories With Wind Energy

The clean energy generated by the plants will be directed to Nestlé factories in the cities of São José do Rio Pardo and Ribeirão Preto in São Paulo, Vila Velha in Espírito Santo, and Ibiá and Ituiutaba in Minas Gerais. These locations produce items such as NINHO® milk, Garoto chocolates, and Purina pet nutrition products. Under the agreement, Enel Green Power will lead the consortia and manage the operation of the parks. The transaction has already been approved by CADE (Administrative Council for Economic Defense) and is awaiting approval from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

The collaboration with Nestlé demonstrates our capacity to expand the use of clean energy through joint efforts for a sustainable goal. We share the commitment to build a better future for all of society. We will continue to be a driver of the energy transition and the diversification of renewable sources use in Brazil, helping our clients reduce carbon emissions, highlights Antonio Scala, CEO of Enel Brasil.

Nestlé Brasil’s Commitment To Sustainability

Nestlé has been operating in Brazil for over 100 years, maintaining its commitment to society by promoting nutrition and well-being to billions of people, fostering an environment of inclusion and opportunities for thousands of Brazilians, and being the country’s most sustainable food producer. The organization employs over 30,000 people in Brazil and has 20 industrial units in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pernambuco, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, and Espírito Santo, in addition to seven distribution centers and over 70 brokers responsible for sales, promotions, merchandising, storage, and distribution.

Committed to good practices from field to consumer’s table, Nestlé works with thousands of suppliers in quality programs in the cocoa, coffee, and milk supply chains, ensuring sustainable production and bringing modernity to the field. The company also maintains initiatives in factories to minimize water and energy use and reduce emissions, as well as reforestation actions and continuous innovations in increasingly sustainable packaging. Nestlé Brasil is present in 98% of households in the country.

The Expansion Of Enel Brasil In The Energy Sector

Enel Brasil operates throughout the energy chain, with activities in distribution, generation, marketing, and customized solutions for residential, public, commercial, and industrial consumers. It is one of the largest private players in the Brazilian electricity sector, supplying energy to over 15 million customers through its distributors in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Ceará.

Through Enel Green Power Brasil, the renewable generation arm of the Enel Group, the company is one of the largest operators of solar and wind energy in the country, with about 6.5 GW in operation, of which more than 3.5 GW are from wind sources, over 1.7 GW are from solar sources, and about 1.3 GW come from hydropower. The company built and operates the largest wind farm in South America, the Lagoa dos Ventos complex in Piauí. In the marketing segment, Enel Trading Brasil S/A buys and sells conventional and incentivized energy in the free market in various states, being among the largest marketers in Brazil.

Additionally, Enel enables the trading of IRECs and carbon credits from its plants. Enel also operates in the country through Enel X, a business line that offers services to accelerate innovation and drive the energy transition, including energy management, efficient public lighting, and infrastructure for electric mobility.
