Hydrogen Fuel Will Replace the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) Used in Aviation

Airbus UpNext, Airbus’ research and development division, announced the launch of a new demonstration program aimed at exploring an innovative architecture for non-propulsive power generation for aviation through the use of hydrogen fuel cells. Aiming to reduce CO2 emissions, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and noise levels, this program will replace the traditional Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) with a hydrogen fuel cell system on a modified Airbus A330.

The Airbus UpNext program aims to develop and test a new power generation architecture for aviation, replacing the conventional APU with a hydrogen fuel cell system. This new approach will not only provide power for non-propulsive functions, such as air conditioning and cabin lighting, but will also contribute to the reduction of harmful gas emissions. By exploring hydrogen fuel cell technology, Airbus seeks to drive the transition to more sustainable aviation with a smaller environmental footprint.

Demonstrating the Operability of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell in Flight

The HyPower program from Airbus UpNext aims to demonstrate the operability and integration of the hydrogen fuel cell system in a real flight environment. Through testing on a modified Airbus A330, the company will seek to validate the stability and system restart during flight, as well as explore new design features and integration techniques in aviation. These tests will contribute to the maturation of safety and operations for future hydrogen-powered aircraft, further promoting the viability of this technology.

Essential Collaboration to Drive Sustainable Aviation

Airbus UpNext recognizes that the transition to more sustainable aviation cannot be achieved in isolation. Therefore, the company emphasizes the importance of collaboration with the Spanish government and external partners to facilitate this series of tests. The flight testing campaign will involve a modified Airbus A330 and a ground testing facility for the system, and Airbus UpNext will acquire a renewable hydrogen production unit to meet the testing needs. This cooperation among different entities will be crucial for advancing the development of hydrogen-powered aircraft and meeting the aviation sector’s decarbonization goals.

Conclusion on the Innovative Program for Aviation

The hydrogen fuel cell demonstration program from Airbus UpNext represents a significant step toward a more sustainable aviation sector with a lower environmental impact. By replacing the traditional APU with a hydrogen fuel cell system, the company aims to reduce harmful gas emissions and explore new technologies to propel the aviation industry toward a more sustainable future. Collaboration with external partners and the Spanish government will be essential for the success of this initiative and for the development of hydrogen-powered aircraft.
