– The Milestone Happens as Otis Recognizes Its 170th Anniversary –
São Paulo, September 20, 2023 – This year, two important milestones are occurring for Otis and Otis Brazil. In addition to the 170th anniversary of the company’s founding, the factory in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) is celebrating its 10th year of operation. To commemorate, here are some notable facts and curiosities:
- Otis’s founder, Elisha Otis, invented the elevator safety brake in 1853, allowing people to use elevators as a safe mode of travel inside buildings for the first time. Until then, elevators were considered safe only for freight. The invention of the elevator enabled the construction of taller buildings and modern cities.
-
Todd Energy will drill an extreme geothermal well up to 6 km deep in New Zealand in search of superheated fluids, facing heat, pressure, and corrosive fluids at depths almost twice that of conventional wells.
-
Engineers from China spent more than 580 days drilling in the Taklamakan Desert, and the project reached a depth of 10,910 meters, crossed 12 geological layers, reached rocks more than 500 million years old, and faced temperatures and pressures so extreme that the last 910 meters took almost a year to complete.
-
A new bridge costing up to $2 billion is beginning to redesign the Panama Canal with six lanes, integration for mass transport, and a strategic crossing aimed at alleviating one of the most critical logistical bottlenecks in Central America.
-
The 634-meter Tokyo Skytree tower became Japan’s tallest antenna by combining a triangular base embedded in mud, 37,000 steel parts, and a pagoda-inspired core that cuts oscillation by up to 50%, keeping 35 million connected even with 1,500 tremors per year.
- Otis’s history in Brazil began in 1906, when its first equipment was installed at the Palácio das Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro. The elevator has been maintained by Otis ever since and remains in operation to this day.
- Otis Brazil’s first factory was inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro in 1934. In 1951, the company’s factory moved to a new site in Santo André, in the ABC Paulista region, and later, in 1991, moved again to a new facility in São Bernardo do Campo. In 2013, a 20,000-square-meter installation was inaugurated at its current location.
- Most new Gen2® machine-room-less elevators installed throughout Brazil are manufactured in São Bernardo do Campo.
- The newest addition to the portfolio of equipment manufactured in São Bernardo do Campo is the Gen2® Comfort elevator, which operates at speeds of up to 1.75 m/s. The equipment has a capacity of up to 21 passengers or 1,600 kg and is especially recommended for customers in the segments of hospitals, clinics, hotels, public transport, education, commercial establishments, and shopping centers.
- Otis Brazil’s facility was designed and built to minimize environmental impacts. Water is reused in the sanitation system through rainwater collection, which is treated with chlorine and dye, generating a water savings of 300m³/month, enough to meet the monthly water needs of over 90 people.
- In 2021, in line with Otis’s global ESG goal, the factory in São Bernardo do Campo received ISO 14001 certification, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
