The discovery of oil in the Potiguar Basin by Petrobras represents a significant milestone in Brazil's energy development.
This Tuesday, (09/04), Petrobras, a national giant in the energy sector, revealed a significant discovery of oil in the ultra-deep waters of the Potiguar Basin. This discovery, made at the Anhangá exploratory well, marks a crucial advance in the search for oil reserves that guarantee Brazil's energy security and sovereignty.
Located on the border between the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, the Anhangá well represents not only a new achievement for Petrobras, but also a potential transformation in the national oil sector.
The Petrobras Discovery in the Potiguar Basin
Well 1-BRSA-1390-RNS (Anhangá) is located in deep waters, approximately 190 km from Fortaleza and 250 km from Natal, at a water depth of 2.196 meters, on the Brazilian Equatorial Margin.

This is the second discovery in the Potiguar Basin in 2024, following the confirmation of the presence of hydrocarbon in the Pitu Oeste Well, located in the BM-POT-17 Concession, approximately 24 km from Anhangá.
Such discoveries open new perspectives for oil exploration in the region and represent an important step in Petrobras' mission to replenish its reserves and explore new energy frontiers.
Petrobras' commitment to safety and the Environment
A Petrobras, as operator of both concessions, emphasizes its unwavering commitment to operational excellence and absolute safety.
With almost 70 years of experience and a history of almost 3 wells drilled in deep and ultra-deep water environments, the company reaffirms its ability to conduct complex operations with environmental responsibility.
The president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, highlights that the company is fully prepared to deal with the challenges of the Equatorial Margin, ensuring respect for people and the environment.
Exploration on the Equatorial Margin
In addition to activities in Brazilian Equatorial Margin, Petrobras expanded its operations, acquiring new blocks in the Pelotas Basin, in southern Brazil, and stakes in exploration blocks in São Tomé and Príncipe, in Africa.
This strategic diversification reflects Petrobras' commitment to ensuring the energy supply necessary for national development, while exploring new opportunities around the world.
Petrobras' future perspectives and investments in the oil and gas sector
The discovery of oil reservoirs in the Potiguar Basin demonstrates the significant potential of this region to contribute to Brazil's energy needs.
Petrobras plans to invest US$7,5 billion in exploration until 2028, with a substantial part of these investments directed to the Equatorial Margin.
It is planned to drill 50 new exploratory wells, including 16 in the Equatorial Margin region, which promises to further increase knowledge and oil production in the area.
Impact of the new oil discovery on the Energy Transition
In the context of the global energy transition, the discovery of new oil and gas reserves is strategic for Brazil.
In addition to ensuring energy security, the company is committed to promoting the decarbonization of its operations, aligning itself with environmental sustainability goals.
Petrobras recognizes the importance of energy diversification and investments in low-carbon energy sources to guarantee a sustainable future.
