With 1.5 Engine of 107 hp and 562-Liter Trunk, Understand Why the Toyota Etios Sedan is the Rational Choice in the Used Car Market.

The Toyota Etios Sedan has established itself in the Brazilian used car market as one of the most pragmatic choices in the R$ 50,000 range. Even though it is no longer in production, it continues to be highly sought after for a combination of attributes that prioritize function over form: an efficient 1.5 engine of up to 107 hp (in the post-2017 versions), an absolute category-leading trunk with 562 liters, and a reputation for almost unquestionable robustness.

Launched in 2012 and produced in Sorocaba (SP) until 2021, the Etios was a strategic project from Toyota for emerging markets, focusing on durability and low cost. Analyses from specialized publications, such as the portal “Olho no Carro”, indicate that despite initial criticisms of its spartan design and simple finish, the vehicle won over consumers seeking one of the lowest ownership costs in the segment and maximum reliability.

The Evolution of the 1.5 Engine to 107 hp

The most crucial technical change in the Toyota Etios Sedan occurred in the 2017 line (launched in 2016). As detailed by specialized publications, the 1.5 engine from the 2NR-FBE family received Dual VVT-i technology (dual variable valve timing), optimizing intake and exhaust. This represented a significant power boost, increasing from the previous 96.5 hp to 107 hp with ethanol and 102 hp with gasoline.

This update, which also eliminated the “cold start” auxiliary tank, transformed the sedan’s performance. Technical databases, such as “iCarros” and “Carros na Web”, confirm that the updated model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 11.3 seconds, with a top speed of 186 km/h. These figures, combined with the lightweight of the car (close to 1,000 kg), ensure sufficient agility for urban use and safety during overtaking on the road.

The 4-Speed Automatic Transmission: Outdated or Robust?

Along with the updated engine, the 2017 line also introduced the option of a four-speed automatic transmission. At the time, this choice was viewed as technologically outdated, as direct competitors offered six-speed or CVT transmissions. However, this was a strategic decision by Toyota, prioritizing proven reliability over the latest technology.

The transmission is renowned for its smoothness and, importantly, for its extreme robustness and low maintenance costs, sharing a similar design to the gearboxes used in older generations of the Corolla. For the risk-averse used car buyer, this transmission represents long-term peace of mind, perfectly aligning with the rational proposition of the Toyota Etios Sedan, which also featured a six-speed manual transmission (instead of five) starting with the same 2017 line.

Interior Space: The Unmatched Advantage of 562 Liters

The most powerful selling point of the Toyota Etios Sedan is undoubtedly its trunk. With an impressive 562 liters of capacity, as validated by technical sheets and analyses from portals like “Olho no Carro”, the volume surpasses not only all its direct competitors (such as Prisma, HB20S, and Grand Siena) but also many sedans in higher categories.

This focus on space extends beyond the trunk. With a wheelbase of 2,550 mm (greater than that of the hatch), the sedan offers a generous legroom in the rear seat. The cabin, praised for its good width and nearly flat rear floor, accommodates a potential fifth passenger with more comfort than the average in the category, making it ideal for families and app drivers.

Interior and Ownership Costs: The “Unbreakable” Reputation

If space is the strong point, the interior finish has always been the weak point. The interior of the Toyota Etios Sedan has faced criticism for the use of hard plastics and, initially, for the controversial central instrument panel. Toyota has made gradual improvements, with the most significant being in the 2017 line, which replaced analog gauges with a “Toyota Smart Screen” digital panel, similar to that of the Prius, greatly enhancing functionality, although the simplicity of the materials was maintained to control costs.

This cost containment, combined with robust engineering, solidifies its low ownership costs. The durability reputation is legendary, as evidenced by owner opinion aggregators on the portal “Carros na Web”. Reports of vehicles exceeding 500,000 km or even 1 million kilometers with the original engine are common, corroborating the “war tank” perception regarding the powertrain.

Besides durability, the Toyota Etios Sedan stands out for its efficiency. Data from Inmetro, compiled by sites like “iCarros”, for the 1.5 engine of 107 hp, indicates averages in gasoline that reach 12.5 km/l in the city and 15.0 km/l on the highway. Combining low consumption, predictable maintenance, and high liquidity in the used car market, the model consolidates itself as one of the safest and most financially predictable purchases.

Safety: The 4 Stars and the Structure Caveat

In terms of safety, the Toyota Etios Sedan (and hatch) received a good rating in a test conducted by Latin NCAP in 2019. Equipped with two airbags and, crucially, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – a standard item starting from the 2018/2019 line – the model achieved four stars for both adult and child protection.

However, the report from the agency noted an important caveat: the cabin structure and the footwell were classified as “unstable”, indicating they might not withstand heavier loads in more severe impacts. It is vital to differentiate between robustness (engine durability) and structural integrity in collisions. The addition of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRC), and Hill Start Assist (HAC) in newer models (post-2018/2019) is an important feature that helps prevent collisions from occurring.

The Toyota Etios Sedan proves that a car does not need bold design or luxury finish to be a sales success and an excellent used option. Its strength lies in logic: unbeatable space, “unbreakable” robustness, and an operating cost that is light on the wallet.

But for you, what weighs more when buying a used sedan: the robustness and giant trunk of the Etios or the design and more refined finish of competitors? Would you have or do you have an Etios Sedan? Leave your experience in the comments!
