Port of Açu and HIF Global Sign Contract to Develop E-Methanol Production, Promoting Sustainable Development and Energy Transition in Brazil.
The Port of Açu has established a new partnership with HIF Global, aiming at the production of e-methanol. This area reservation contract strengthens the companies’ commitment to sustainability and the energy transition in Brazil. The collaboration was announced at a significant event in the energy sector, marking an important step in this journey.
The strategic location of the Port of Açu on the Brazilian coast creates considerable opportunities for the development of the private port-industrial complex. This alliance reinforces the position of the Port of Açu as an essential facilitator in the production of green fuels. This innovative project promises to boost the value chain in the energy context. In summary, the Port of Açu consolidates itself as a critical hub for industrial progress in the country.
Port of Açu Signs Contract with HIF Global
This year, in Rio de Janeiro, the movement towards sustainability and innovation gains strength with the Port of Açu. On September 24, 2024, the Port, one of the most relevant in Brazil, signed an area reservation contract with HIF Global, a multinational company specializing in e-fuels. HIF is dedicated to developing projects aimed at tackling climate change. The agreement was formalized during the ROG, Brazil’s leading energy fair.

HIF Global secured an area within the pre-licensed hydrogen and derivatives hub of the port complex to install an e-methanol production plant, a clean and highly innovative fuel. The production will utilize hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources, as well as recycled CO2.
Innovation at the Port of Açu and the Energy Matrix
This process not only contributes to the decarbonization of the energy matrix but also positions Brazil as a leader in the production of sustainable fuels, covering everything from transportation to energy generation. According to Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo, ‘our agreement with HIF Global is a milestone for the Port of Açu and for our region in this new industry. We are committed to promoting sustainable development and contributing to a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.’
The production of e-methanol at the Port of Açu has the potential to be exported through the Liquid Terminal of the private port-industrial complex. HIF’s project, which marks a significant advancement in the energy transition in Brazil, strengthens the Port’s position as a national and global hub for green hydrogen.
Large Scale Hub and Renewable Energy at the Port of Açu
The initiative aligns with the federal government’s strategy to encourage innovation and the use of renewable energy sources, aiming for clear targets for reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. HIF brings its international experience and advanced technology to develop this project. Cesar Norton, president and CEO of HIF Global, emphasized: ‘This is our first venture in Brazil. We have operated the world’s first e-fuels facility for over a year, proving that our fuels are a real solution to combat climate change. We are excited about this collaboration and believe that the Port of Açu will be a key pillar in the joint construction of a sustainable future.’
Port of Açu: Reference Port and Logistics Complex
The Port of Açu, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, already has prior environmental licensing for the development of a large-scale hydrogen hub and its derivatives. This port complex stands out not only as an important logistics and industrial center but is now also positioning itself as a significant player in the renewable energy sector. The project aims to attract new investments and boost the local economy.
About the Port of Açu, located in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, it is the largest private deep-water port-industry complex in Latin America. It began operations in 2014 and is managed by Porto do Açu Operações, a partnership between Prumo Logística, controlled by EIG, and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International.
Port of Açu and HIF Global: Partnership for a Sustainable Future
The Port of Açu already hosts 22 companies, including world-class clients and partners. Its activities in minerals, oil, and natural gas are consolidated and expanding, with a focus on low-carbon projects. Therefore, it is recognized as the energy transition port in the country.
Meanwhile, HIF Global, a world leader in e-fuels, develops projects globally to convert renewable energy into nearly carbon-neutral e-fuels that can be used in existing engines. The mission and name of the company, HIF (Highly Innovative Fuels), reflect its commitment to enabling the decarbonization of the planet.’>
