Prince William Received the Keys to Rio, Discussed Public Security with Eduardo Paes, and Highlighted His Environmental Agenda
This morning, November 3, 2025, the heir to the British throne arrived in Rio de Janeiro around 11:40 AM, kicking off his first official visit to Brazil. Right after landing, he headed to Sugarloaf Mountain, where he received the keys to the city. The gesture represents one of the most traditional symbols of the municipality.
With a strong security detail, the meeting included Mayor Eduardo Paes and several local authorities. In addition, William emphasized his commitment to environmental issues, especially concerning the Earthshot Prize and the United for Wildlife Program. Both initiatives focus on sustainability and nature conservation.
Conversation with the Mayor and Mention of Public Security
During the ceremony, the prince praised the natural beauty of Rio and, at the same time, expressed concern for security. Eduardo Paes reported that the heir commented on the incidents of violence recorded the previous week. At that time, 121 people died in a police operation in the Penha and Alemão complexes.
Thus, the issue of urban security became a focal point in their dialogue. The conversation reinforced the prince’s interest in understanding the social and structural challenges of the city.
Gratitude on Social Media and Message to Rio
After the event, the Prince of Wales posted a message on social media, thanking for the warm welcome from Rio.
According to him, it was “an honor to receive the keys to the city at the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain”.
He also highlighted that the next few days would be “exciting”, with the Earthshot Prize and United for Wildlife. Thus, the gesture reinforced the diplomatic and institutional character of the visit.

History of the British Royal Family in Brazil
The visit of Prince William is not the first by the British royalty to Rio.
In 2012, Prince Harry visited the city.
Also, Charles III, William’s father, was in Brazil in 2009 to promote sustainable development actions.
Therefore, William’s visit reaffirms the royal family’s commitment to the environment. In addition, it strengthens diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and Brazil.
