Federal Institute of Brasília (IFB) Launches Free Courses in Basic 2 and Intermediate Brazilian Sign Language, Strengthening Inclusion and Accessibility in Education.

In an increasingly connected world, communication plays a fundamental role in promoting inclusion and accessibility.

The Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) emerges as an essential tool for integrating the deaf community into society, enabling more effective and equitable interaction.

Recognizing this need, the Federal Institute of Brasília (IFB) launches an initiative aimed at training individuals interested in learning Libras, strengthening communicative ties and promoting linguistic diversity.

On February 19, 2025, the IFB published Notice 2/2025, announcing the opening of registrations for in-person courses in Basic 2 Libras and Intermediate Libras.

These courses are free and intended for both the general public and employees of the Department of Education of the Federal District (SEEDF), as established in the Cooperation Agreement No. 03/2021 between the IFB and the Government of the Federal District (GDF).

Registrations can be done online until March 31, 2025, providing an accessible opportunity for all interested in enhancing their communicative skills and promoting social inclusion.

Why Is Learning Libras So Important?

Brazilian Sign Language is recognized as a legal means of communication and expression by Law No. 10.436/2002.

Learning Libras allows more people to interact with the deaf community, breaking down barriers and promoting a more accessible and inclusive environment.

In Brazil, it is estimated that more than 10 million people have some degree of hearing impairment, with about 2.7 million experiencing severe hearing loss.

This scenario highlights the need for greater dissemination of Libras, to ensure that communication between deaf and hearing individuals is natural and efficient.

Understanding Libras not only enhances social inclusion but can also be a differentiator in the job market.

Professionals trained to communicate in this language have more opportunities in areas such as education, public service, health, and public administration, where communicational accessibility is an increasingly valued differentiator.

Details of the Courses Offered by IFB

For those wishing to improve their communication in Libras, the IFB is offering two in-person courses lasting four months.

The courses have been designed to cater to both beginners and those who already possess prior knowledge, allowing for a natural progression in learning the language.

Basic 2 Libras – Afternoon:

  • Workload: 60 hours
  • Period: April 17 to August 4, 2025
  • Time: 2 PM to 5:20 PM
  • Location: Regional Administration of Sobradinho

Intermediate Libras – Morning:

  • Workload: 60 hours
  • Period: April 17 to August 4, 2025
  • Time: 8 AM to 11:20 AM
  • Location: Inter-School Language Center (CIL)

Criteria for Enrollment in the Courses

The courses are open to anyone who meets the criteria established by the notice.

To enroll in the Basic 2 Libras course, the candidate must present a certificate or declaration of completion of the course Basic 1 Libras, with a minimum workload of 60 hours.

For the Intermediate course, in addition to the Basic 1 certificate, the completion of the Basic 2 Libras course is required.

The notice reserves 50% of the vacancies for the general public and the other 50% for SEEDF employees. Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age: 16 years old by the enrollment date
  • Education: Completed Elementary School I
  • Technical requirement: Must have a Google (Gmail) email account

Additionally, interested employees must prove an active link with SEEDF, as specified in the notice.

This equitable division of vacancies reinforces IFB’s commitment to the continued education of teaching professionals and the community at large, promoting a more inclusive society prepared for diversity.

How Does the Selection Process Work?

Registrations are completely free and must be done online.

The selection process will take place through an electronic draw, ensuring transparency and equality of opportunities for all candidates.

Each step of the process, from registration to enrollment, has been carefully structured to ensure the confidentiality of the information provided and adherence to the ethical and transparency principles of IFB.

To register, interested parties must access the official selection process website of the IFB, available at https://processoseletivo.ifb.edu.br.

On the portal, it is necessary to create an account or log in using the CPF and registered password. After logging in, the candidate must select the desired course, watch an orientation lecture available on the site, and follow the instructions to complete the registration.

The electronic draw will be held in April, and selected candidates will receive an email with instructions for enrollment.

In case of withdrawals, candidates from the waiting list will be called, according to the order of the draw.
