Roll-on Green Steel Metal Roof with Low CO2 Emission Steel. New Warehouse in Baixada Fluminense Will Be the First in Brazil with This Technology.

Roll-on Green Steel Metal Roof with Low CO2 Emission Steel. New warehouse in Baixada Fluminense will be the first in Brazil with this technology. #ESG #sustainability #construction. Metal Roof with Carbon Reduction Logistics warehouse in Rio will be the country’s first to feature an exclusive metal roof system with reduced CO2 emissions at source * The global trend towards a more responsible environmental agenda has mobilized all segments of the economy. The ESG criteria that encompass this concept are already a reality and a point of no return.

With growing concern for the environment, the use of metal roofing, metal ceilings, and metal rooves has stood out as a sustainable and modern option for the construction industry. Furthermore, the installation of a metal roofing system can significantly contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, having a positive impact on the environment and society as a whole. It is important to emphasize the significance of investing in technologies that promote sustainability and sustainable development, aiming for a more balanced and conscious future.

Marko Metal Systems Produces Logistics Warehouse with Sustainable Metal Roof

In this context, Marko Metal Systems, exclusive manufacturer of the Roll-on roofing system, a patented product in over 20 countries, is engaged and begins producing the material to initiate, in the second half, construction of Brazil’s first logistics warehouse with Roll-on Green Steel roofing using low CO2 emission steel, an innovative product that contributes to a greener and more sustainable future. The warehouse, which will be built on the Presidente Dutra Highway around São João de Meriti, Baixada Fluminense, will receive the XCarb™ green steel certificate from ArcelorMittal, Brazil’s largest steel producer and a leader in the global market.

Commitment to Environmental Agenda and ESG Criteria

The certificate is part of the XCarb® Program and represents the path towards decarbonization of the steel production process and the goal of zero emissions by 2050. According to Marko’s Operations Director, Christophe Schwarzberg, the so-called Green Steel, with reduced carbon emissions, is expected to quickly gain traction in Europe, and other countries will follow this agenda, which is already happening in Brazil. For him, within this awareness of sustainability, clients will strive for carbon emission compensation in their construction processes, and Marko is ready to meet their needs.

Innovations in Metal Roofing for Sustainability

‘Our roofing is already designed to enable energy savings, water reuse, application of solar panels on the roof, various thermal and acoustic comfort solutions, and now, with low carbon emission steel, it is firmly established as a solution aligned with environmental protection’, says Christophe. According to him, the company has added this concept to its roofing system in a move to bring more sustainable resources to logistics condominiums, responding not only to customer demand but also increasingly aligning with the ESG agenda.

Expansion and Growth of Metal Structure in Brazil

He emphasizes that the Roll-on roofing, by its nature, already has sustainability DNA as it is an industrial metal structure, 100% manufactured in galvanized steel without welds or overlapping, and does not require painting or other processes harmful to the environment. ‘We take pride in having an exclusive product worldwide, with technology developed by the company and fully aligned with sustainability. Our system provides a clean construction site, allows water to flow to the edge of the building, facilitating the capture of rainwater for reuse and eliminating the need for drainage networks inside; it enables natural ventilation and thermal-acoustic insulation, reducing energy consumption; and it also offers the possibility of recycling leftover steel, as it has high added value and can be melted to create other parts’, he details, also highlighting that Marko is currently considering resuming its affiliation with GBC – Green Building Council – an organization whose mission is to develop the sustainable construction industry in the country. Data from IBGE shows that the production of metal structures in 2021 reached 1.67 million tons.

Impact of Roll-on Green Steel in the Market

Data from ABCEM – Brazilian Association of Metallic Construction indicate that, since 2019, the sector’s growth has been reaching 21% per year. Christophe adds to the numbers, highlighting that Marko reached the milestone of 20 million m² of installed metal roofing in recent years, recording an annual average of over 1 million m² of Roll-on roofing executed. According to him, during the pandemic, he saw demand grow significantly. ‘This can be explained by the overwhelming advance of e-commerce’, he points out, announcing that the company is in the midst of an expansion process not only nationally but also advancing throughout Latin America and the USA.

Expansion Plans of Marko Metal Systems

Marko, which has among its clients large retail chains, industries, and major logistics developers such as Prologis, GLP, Brookfield, Gtis, BRProperties, Bresco, Hines, among others, plans to invest R$ 20 million in 2024/2025 in building a new manufacturing unit in Pernambuco, in addition to evaluating the implementation of another factory, this time on American soil. The company’s estimate, whose revenue is around R$ 400 million per year, is to close the year with a revenue 30% higher than last year.

Advantages of the Roll-on System and the XCarb Certificate

Genuinely Brazilian, the Roll-on system allows a large internal area free of columns for better use of space, with large distances between spans, as the pillars and beams are thinner than concrete equivalents, meaning internal area increases and the distance between pillars also widens. It enables material and labor rationalization, as the industrialized system avoids waste and requires fewer workers. It also offers flexibility for renovations, as it allows for the incorporation of new metal elements to meet the needs of new projects. With the advantage of assembling the roof entirely on the ground, it provides safety for the job, as it reduces more than 90% of work at height. It is a product with ready availability and quick assembly, therefore accelerating the project’s physical-financial timeline and becoming more attractive for large-scale projects that need to adhere to a tighter schedule due to all parts of the project.

The XCarb© is a global program from ArcelorMittal, launched in 2021, aimed at gathering all the Group’s efforts and investments with the mission of reducing and neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions in the steel supply chain. One of the program’s initiatives is the green steel certificate. These certificates are issued by ArcelorMittal based on CO2 savings, guaranteed by DNV, an independent body that attests to the reliability of the process. By purchasing a product with this certificate, the carbon savings achieved by ArcelorMittal in the process are also transferred to the buying company.
