Santa Catarina Will Have 16 Ships Built in Local Shipyards, with Investments of Over R$ 7 Billion and an Expectation of 15,000 Jobs
Santa Catarina will be the center of a new phase of the Brazilian Naval Industry. At an event held on Thursday (29) at the Port of Itajaí, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Petrobras President Magda Chambriard announced a significant investment.
The state will build 16 vessels under the Fleet Renewal and Expansion Program of the Petrobras System. The national package provides for R$ 29 billion in investments by 2026.
Of the total of 52 vessels contracted by Petrobras, 30% will be the responsibility of the Santa Catarina shipyards Navship, in Navegantes, and Starnav, in Itajaí.

Styrofoam block cut with hot wire turned into a real boat with three layers of fiberglass and polyester resin, floats without rotting or rusting, carries up to five people, and uses a professional shipyard sandwich technique for less than R$ 500 per square meter.
The investment in the state exceeds R$ 7 billion. Thus, the expectation is to create 15,000 direct and indirect jobs, consolidating Santa Catarina as a strategic hub for the naval industry.
Deputy Ana Paula Lima, deputy leader of the Lula government in the House, highlighted the importance of the announcement. “This announcement is a milestone for Brazil and, especially, for Santa Catarina. We are talking about the largest revival of the naval industry in almost a decade. It is development, it is job creation, it is the Santa Catarina industry back at the center of national decisions,” she stated.
The vessels planned in the project include 12 PSV-type ships, which are responsible for transporting supplies to platforms and are known as “trucks of the sea.”
In addition, 4 ORSVs will be built, ships specialized in supporting oil recovery in the event of leaks. The first deliveries are expected to occur as early as 2026, with the possibility of new contracts in the future, depending on the progress of the bids.
During the visit to the Port of Itajaí, President Lula also announced other federal investments. R$ 689 million will be allocated to the port terminal through the New PAC.
Additionally, the largest operation of electric vehicles ever recorded in Brazil was celebrated, with 7,000 units moved at the port.
Deputy Ana Paula Lima concluded by emphasizing the role of the federal government: “The presence of President Lula in Itajaí symbolizes a new era for Santa Catarina. The federal government has resumed strong investments in our state, even without support from the state government. And our mandate remains steadfast to ensure that these investments reach those who need them most.”
