After Ibama Approval, Vessel Heads to Equatorial Margin to Conduct Simulation That May Authorize Drilling by Petrobras in the Region.
The drillship ODN-II has started its journey towards the coast of Amapá. The vessel will be essential for conducting a simulation in the Amazon River Mouth Basin, a decisive step for Petrobras to obtain the drilling license in a new exploratory frontier.
The Journey of the ODN-II Drillship to the Equatorial Margin
The ODN-II drillship is on its way to the Equatorial Margin. The vessel received authorization from Ibama to begin its movement towards the coast of Amapá. This clearance occurred after the completion of the coral removal process.
It is expected that the trip will take a few weeks. The arrival of the drillship at its destination is estimated to occur between the last week of June and the first week of July. The vessel will be used for drilling in block FZA-M-59.

The Final Test Before Drilling
Before any drilling activity, a crucial step must be fulfilled. A Pre-Operational Assessment (APO) will be conducted. This procedure is a drill to test Petrobras’ response capacity in the event of an oil spill.
The APO represents the final step necessary for the company. Success in this assessment is essential for Ibama to grant the long-awaited license to drill the well in the Amazon River Mouth Basin.
History of the ODN-II Drillship in the Region
This is not the first time that the ODN-II Drillship has moved to the Equatorial Margin. In mid-2023, the ship had already traveled to the region with the aim of conducting the same Pre-Operational Assessment.
However, on that occasion, Ibama denied the license request. Due to this decision, Petrobras needed to demobilize the drillship, which returned to its operations in the Campos Basin.
The Future of Drilling in Block FZA-M-59
The operation of the ODN-II Drillship, owned by Foresea, is secured by a contract. The current agreement is valid until October.
According to Petronotícias, Petrobras has already clarified its plans in case drilling begins before the contract ends. The company stated that, once started, the operation may continue until completion, even if the activity exceeds the final deadline of the agreement.
