Shell’s New Venture for Green Hydrogen Production at Porto do Açu Is Part of the Investment Plan the Company Will Make in the Brazilian Market Over the Coming Years

Shell and Porto do Açu, located in São João da Barra, in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, signed a memorandum of understanding last Thursday (05/19) to enable a new venture at the site. The energy company plans to carry out the construction of a plant for green hydrogen production to invest in the resource and further expand its presence in the Brazilian energy market, with operations scheduled for 2025.

Green Hydrogen Production Plant at Porto do Açu Is Shell’s New Venture Focused on the National Energy Market

Representatives from the energy company Shell and the administration of Porto do Açu met last Thursday to sign a memorandum of understanding. This agreement aims to enable the construction of Shell’s new venture in the complex, a green hydrogen production plant.

Thus, the company intends to leverage the available resources in the complex and the region to diversify its energy production and focus on alternative and renewable sources for that purpose. Additionally, the energy company stated that the initial forecast for the start of resource production at the new venture is 2025, and Shell will focus its investments on the project to make this possible.

Furthermore, the green hydrogen production plant to be built at Porto do Açu will have an initial capacity of 10 megawatts (MW), which can be expanded to a total of 100 MW in the future, should Shell wish to further increase its production capacity at the venture. During the initial phases of the project, the electrolyzer plant will be powered by electricity from the grid, thus ensuring a more efficient supply along the production chain.

In addition, Shell and Porto do Açu confirmed that part of the production will be allocated for storage and subsequent delivery to potential consumers. Finally, any remaining green hydrogen after the entire allocation process will be sent to the renewable ammonia generation plant, which will also be part of the company’s venture in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The Company’s New Venture at Porto do Açu Will Be Built Through an Investment of US$ 120 Million by the Company in R&D in Brazil

Shell recently announced its latest investment plan in Brazil, the Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D) clause from ANP, in which the company plans to invest between US$ 60 million and US$ 120 million during 2022. Thus, the green hydrogen production plant at Porto do Açu will be made possible through this package, and only in the initial phases, the project may require US$ 20 million to US$ 40 million in investments, according to the company.

Despite the need for significant funding for construction, the venture will be essential for the company’s growth in Brazil, and Shell Brazil’s president, André Araujo, stated that “We aim with this pilot to foster the entire development of the renewable hydrogen generation value chain, from technology suppliers to plant operation mastery and the training of specialized labor. Additionally, we intend to facilitate a series of proof-of-concept projects related to decarbonization of sectors.”

Shell currently has green hydrogen production plants in Germany, the Netherlands, and China and now intends to bring this new focus to the national territory, as Brazil is a global reference in energy production from alternative and renewable sources.
