Ocyan Innovates with Dynamic Monitoring of Operational Safety Barriers in Real Time
Rio de Janeiro, April 12, 2021 – To enhance the safety of drilling operations, Ocyan developed the Dynamic Monitoring System for Operational Safety Barriers in real time, significantly increasing the visibility and prediction of risks on drilling platforms. The new system makes decision-making increasingly accurate and minimizes the occurrence of unwanted events in offshore units.

This unprecedented system in the market can be applied to other sectors, such as the petrochemical and mining industry. The company invested about one million dollars in this innovation, which is used in remote monitoring activities developed at the company’s base in Macaé (RJ).
“The monitoring of the barriers provides greater visibility to the main risk study of Ocyan’s drilling platforms. It increasingly integrates the risk study contained in the Safety Case into daily operations by enabling the visualization of the integrity of safeguard barriers, ensuring accuracy in decision-making to ensure operational continuity safely,” explains Carlos Júnior, Executive Manager of Sustainability at Ocyan’s Drilling Unit.

The information captured by the system is automated through artificial intelligence, reducing human interference and the likelihood of errors in the process. This project transformed Ocyan’s fleet risk studies into dynamic documents, incorporated into the crew’s daily operations for activity execution and decision-making.
“With the traditional method, the risk study was a snapshot of the moment the document was being prepared. With this innovation, everything became more integrated. Today, in the Safety Case of each Ocyan maritime unit, there are at least 17 LOPA risk analyses – Bow Tie, a semi-quantitative risk assessment tool, totaling at least 85 different studies for the Ocyan fleet, which has its barriers monitored in real time,” explains the executive.
Features of This New System from Ocyan
The new system monitors the barriers of the risk study in three dimensions. The first is the Physical Barrier, comprised of the Maintenance Monitoring and Control System – IBM Maximo, which checks preventive and corrective maintenance as well as risk analysis of work orders.
The second evaluates the Human Barrier through software that controls the presence of the crew and people on board (POB), monitors the matrix of mandatory training defined by Ocyan and the client, as well as the training matrix in specific procedures for performing activities. It can identify, for example, if the crew is in compliance with Ocyan’s training matrix.
The third is the Organizational Barrier, composed of checklists, inspection forms, and checklists that are carried out through the electronic system in the units, via web, mobile phones, or tablets, developed by the startup Checklist Fácil, which participated in Ocyan Waves in 2019, the company’s open innovation program.
“This set of innovations is part of a new moment of investment in operational safety and was created uniquely by Ocyan. This innovation process is dynamic; to the extent that we are evaluating the development of two new dimensions, which will be the Supervisory System and the verification of Metaoceanographic conditions of the units,” he concludes.
Innovative System
The system was developed in partnership with Intelie, and the technological foundation uses the Ocyan SMART structure. The goal was to create a tool that was completely integrated with the operational system of these units. Ocyan contributed to the technical issues regarding risk coordination and structure. Intelie was responsible for developing the entire system structure.
“The results of the process are visible immediately, which generates a huge gain in the quality of decision-making. If a risk is considered intolerable, the system automatically issues alarms and emails to all onboard, offshore, and onshore leadership,” clarifies Carlos Júnior. He also notes that the system is completely user-friendly and allows the end user to view the complete current scenario without needing to access different platforms to analyze the information.
The system utilizes the bow tie risk study methodology, which analyzes the top events in each main identified hazard. In addition to permitting a detailed assessment of scenarios, this visual communication tool reaches all levels of crew members and demonstrates that operational safety depends on individual actions in the same location. The diagram not only shows the existing controls but also details who is responsible for ensuring that the barrier is functional and in operation.
