According to Sindipetro, Company Is Ignoring Problem That Could Compromise the Operation and Safety of the Platform. Petrobras Denies Omission.
Sindipetro informed this Wednesday, 21, that the workers onboard the Merluza platform, 180 kilometers off the coast of Praia Grande in São Paulo, have been facing an outbreak of diarrhea and vomiting since the weekend. Petrobras claims to have provided assistance despite a recent incident where a worker was injured on the company’s platform.
According to the Union of Oil Workers of the Paulista Coast, the suspicion is that there has been contamination of the water or the food served to the workers. At least six of them had already presented symptoms by the evening of Tuesday, 20, but there are other outsourced employees, not quantified, with the same condition.

Viih Tube, former BBB contestant and millionaire, lives in a mansion worth R$ 8.5 million with a heated artificial lake, two cinemas, a complete spa, and a giant playroom of 120 m² for the couple’s children.
The union leadership representing the category stated that the situation falls under the protocol for suspected Foodborne Illness (FBI). The workers would need to be disembarked as soon as possible, and the entire supply structure should be analyzed to avoid compromising the operation of the platform.
The Sindipetro claims that Petrobras is ignoring the situation and does not want to classify the suspicion as an outbreak. “The management of Merluza refused to participate in a meeting called by the representatives of Cipa (Internal Committee for Accident Prevention), as is expected in situations like this,” the entity declared in a statement.
“The disregard for the health of workers is so blatant that even the suggestion box available in the cafeteria [of the Merluza platform] is being hidden from the oil workers,” wrote the union’s board in the same text. They demand action from Petrobras to repair, contain, and reverse the problem.
The Merluza platform has been in operation since 1993 in the Merluza and Lagosta gas fields, at a depth of 131 meters. According to Petrobras, production is transported to the mainland via a 215-kilometer pipeline from the platform to the Presidente Bernardes Refinery (RPBC) in Cubatão.
Petrobras, in a statement, reported that “four workers from the platform had food discomfort on Sunday,” but they were released for activities. According to the company, the employees were given preventive and immediate care in the unit’s infirmary, with medical follow-up via videoconference.
