Ultracargo Performs Direct Transshipment Operation Between Ship and Barge in Vila do Conde (PA), Reducing Time by 33% and Optimizing Regional Logistics.
The transshipment operation is a crucial process in many port terminals, streamlining cargo movement and optimizing the logistical flow. Recently, Ultracargo has stood out in this scenario by implementing technological advancements that have boosted the efficiency of its operations. The company has managed to not only accelerate procedures but also enhance the safety and accuracy of transshipment operations at the Vila do Conde terminal in Pará.
In the current context, the introduction of the method known as direct transshipment has significantly innovated the way cargo is transferred between different modes of transport. This approach allows for direct transshipment between ship and barge to occur more quickly, reducing the usual operation time by approximately one-third. Additionally, the STB operation was a strategy adopted by Ultracargo to ensure a much more agile and efficient service, benefiting customers by providing greater logistical capacity on-site. The implementation of this innovation brings a positive impact not only in operational terms but also on regional competitiveness.
Innovation in Transshipment Operation
The direct transshipment operation, known as STB (Ship To Barge), at the Vila do Conde Terminal (PA), represents a remarkable milestone by improving the movement of fuels in the region. This transshipment operation allows for the direct loading of the barges from the ship, using an already licensed line, revolutionizing the procedure by eliminating the need for intermediate tanks. This pioneering innovation in optimizing fuel movement has reduced operation time by 33%, with even greater potential for efficiency. Thus, the transshipment operation becomes more effective for customers, expanding the logistical capacity of the terminal.

While Boeing and Lockheed invest billions in more efficient turbofan engines, Texas startup CycloKinetics unveils a synthetic liquid fuel that increases the range of aircraft, missiles, and rockets by 32 percent just by swapping the tank without changing the turbine.
Execution by Ultracargo
With the execution under the responsibility of Ultracargo, the transshipment operation is meticulously controlled and safe, ensuring the full involvement of the Port Authority, customers, and vessels. Among the main benefits, operational efficiency stands out, with a remarkable 33% reduction in operation time and optimization of port infrastructure and costs, allowing for new operations and increasing product turnover. Another benefit includes the viability of Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), providing a strategic solution for the region’s supply.
The management of Ultracargo’s terminals, led by Anderson Gomes in Vila do Conde and Itaqui (MA), faced technical and operational challenges to bring this new transshipment operation to fruition. A high level of regulatory control is required, along with specific safety training and robust analysis to ensure the maintenance of the quality of the infrastructures and products involved.
Strategic Advancement in Waterway Logistics
The introduction of this transshipment operation also represents a significant strategic advancement for Ultracargo, strengthening waterway logistics in the North region, which holds great potential but still lacks efficient solutions. The new operation enables the addressing of the growing demand for local vessels in a more competitive manner, exploring the cost-benefit of water transport. Moreover, a rigorous change management process has been adopted to safely integrate the different vessels involved, respecting operational limitations and fully meeting regulatory and environmental requirements, as explained by Leopoldo Gimenes, Vice President of Engineering and Operations.
Impacts on Transportation and Supply
According to Gimenes, the transshipment operation is vital to the company’s inland strategy, significantly contributing to the flow of fuels and positioning the North region as a central hub for the transport of fuels and agricultural inputs. The new operation strengthens the offer of more efficient and integrated logistical solutions to customers. With the increasing demand and the grain harvest in the Northern Arc, Ultracargo plays a crucial role in consolidating this location as a pillar in the distribution of Brazilian agricultural products, as well as contributing to expanding the supply of fuels and enhancing the country’s logistical infrastructure.
