Firefighters from Santa Catarina Warn About Risks of Improper Use of Cooking Gas and Emphasize Simple Precautions to Avoid Serious Home Accidents
The Military Fire Department of Santa Catarina (CBMSC) issued a new alert about the risks of improper use of cooking gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Commonly found in homes and businesses, the product can cause serious accidents when installed incorrectly.
Gas Cylinder Should Be Outside
To prevent leaks, fires, and even explosions, firefighters recommend that the gas cylinder always be kept outside the house.
Ideally, it should be in a covered, ventilated area away from any heat sources. These simple guidelines help protect both the structure and the residents.

Check Valves and Connections
In addition to the installation location, it is important to conduct regular checks on valves and connections. Observing the hose’s expiration date and using only certified equipment are essential measures.
The gas cylinder should also be changed in a ventilated area, with extra attention paid throughout the process.
Gas Smell Requires Quick Action
If you smell gas, the first action should be to close the cylinder valve. Next, ventilate the area and avoid turning on switches, using lighters, or any open flames.
If the odor is very strong, it is recommended to leave the location and call the emergency number 193 for the Fire Department.
Do Not Improvise, Call for Assistance
The CBMSC emphasizes that improvisation or attempts to fix issues without technical knowledge are dangerous. Whenever there is doubt or need for repair, the recommendation is to seek authorized technical assistance. In emergencies, the firefighters’ service is available 24 hours a day.
