Scientists In Hong Kong Create Robot That Bends And Ties Steel Bars Automatically, Bringing Advancements To The Construction Industry And Raising Questions About The Future Of Jobs In The Field
Bending steel reinforcement bars, or rebar, is a tough and repetitive task on construction sites, requiring intense physical effort and patience. To solve this problem, scientists from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) developed an innovative robot that promises to revolutionize the construction sector.
With the simple push of a button, the robot is able to move along the steel bars and tie them automatically, a process that is usually done manually by construction workers.
This invention is part of a smart construction initiative led by Haozhen, a visionary researcher who dreams of transforming the future of construction.

A bridge costing R$ 379 million will replace the ferry that has been the only way to cross the Uruguay River between SC and RS for decades, and it promises to shorten the journey by up to 100 kilometers and nearly two hours.
“The construction industry has relied on traditional methods throughout its history, which led me to think of new ways to achieve smart construction,” Haozhen said. For him, creating this robot is just the first step in his journey to become an entrepreneur who combines research and technology.
How The Robot Works And Its Efficiency

The rebar tying robot is fully automated and has the potential to significantly increase productivity in the construction sector. It can tie a knot in just five seconds, which is three to four times faster than human capability.
This means that, over the course of a workday, the robot can outperform a human worker by several orders of magnitude, in addition to freeing professionals from the exhausting task of bending and tying bars manually.
The speed and precision of the robot are especially valuable in large construction projects, where time is crucial and the demand for efficiency is constant.
Will These Robots Take Jobs From Humans?
However, the introduction of this robot also raises an important question: Will it replace human workers?
Li, another team member, believes that the robot will not take jobs from construction workers.
“It will not replace human workers, but instead, help them enhance their performance. It will also relieve them from their physically demanding work, which will help increase safety on the job,” he explained.
This aspect is crucial, as safety on construction sites is always a constant concern. Reducing the physical burden on workers can prevent injuries and extend the careers of professionals.
Furthermore, collaboration between humans and robots can open doors to a more intelligent and efficient type of construction. Workers will be able to focus their efforts on more complex and strategic tasks while robots take on repetitive and exhausting functions.
The robot developed by scientists in Hong Kong is a step toward automation in the construction sector. Although machines are not yet able to fully replace human workers, they have the potential to improve efficiency, enhance safety, and alleviate the physical burden on workers.
