Health Surveillance carries out partial interdiction of a supermarket of the Mateus Group in São Luís after identifying serious irregularities, reinforcing inspections in the units of Matthew Group in the city.

Supermarket inspections in São Luís have become increasingly rigorous, and Grupo Mateus has become the target of an action by the Health Surveillance Agency and Procon/MA. Last Friday (07), a Grupo Mateus unit in São Luís, located in the João Paulo neighborhood, was fined after several health violations were found, including the presence of a decomposing rat inside the establishment. The seriousness of the situation led to the partial closure of the supermarket, which now has a set period of time to solve the problems before being able to fully resume its activities.

Serious irregularities: find out what led to the partial closure of the Mateus Group supermarket in São Luís

During the inspection carried out by the Institute for the Promotion and Defense of Citizens and Consumers of Maranhão (Procon/MA), together with the Health Surveillance Agency, several violations were found that put the health of consumers at risk. Among the problems identified at the Grupo Mateus supermarket in São Luís were the presence of accumulated garbage, open packaging, excessive dirt and food remains mixed in with the products for sale.

However, the most alarming point was the discovery of a decomposing rat within the establishment, evidencing serious failures in the hygiene and sanitary control of the place. The presence of an animal in a state of putrefaction within an environment that sells food is considered a very serious infraction, as it can cause contamination and risks to public health.

Given the seriousness of the situation, Procon/MA determined the closure of sectors 18 and 19 of the supermarket, preventing the sale of products from these sectors until all irregularities are resolved.

30-day deadline for regularization of the supermarket and new inspection by the Health Surveillance Agency

After the partial closure, Grupo Mateus in São Luís has 30 days to correct all identified defects and ensure that the environment is suitable for the sale of food products. During this period, products from the closed sectors cannot be sold to the public, unless there is a technical report issued by a qualified professional confirming that the items are fit for consumption.

The closure of the affected sectors will only happen after a new inspection by the Health Surveillance and Procon, which will verify whether all corrective measures have been implemented and whether the supermarket is complying with health requirements.

The president of Procon/MA, Karen Barros, emphasized that inspections in supermarkets are frequent and rigorous, with the aim of ensuring food safety and protecting consumer rights. She reinforced that any failure to comply with health standards or consumer rights can result in severe penalties for establishments.

Repeated offenses may result in fines and new bans for Grupo Mateus in São Luís

If Grupo Mateus in São Luís does not resolve all irregularities within the established deadline, new measures may be adopted, including extending the supermarket's closure and imposing fines. Failure to comply with health regulations is considered a risk factor for the population and may even lead to the permanent closure of the unit, depending on the severity of the violations.

Furthermore, repeated health problems can harm the company's reputation, driving away consumers who are concerned about the quality and safety of the products sold. Grupo Mateus, one of the largest retailers in Brazil, needs to ensure that all of its units meet the required health standards to avoid new sanctions.

How to report health irregularities in supermarkets in São Luís?

The population has a fundamental role in monitoring and combating health irregularities in supermarkets. Procon/MA advises that any consumer who witnesses inadequate conditions in commercial establishments should file a complaint through official channels.

Complaints can be made through the official Procon Maranhão website (www.procon.ma.gov.br) or via the Viva Procon app, available for download on mobile devices. The public's collaboration is essential to ensure that all establishments comply with health standards and offer products that are safe for consumption.

The kind of thing you won't see in the Cohama unit, nor in Calhau, and much less in Renascença, but in COHAB, São Cristóvão, and "less affluent" neighborhoods...! It's impressive the difference in how people are treated in the city's humble neighborhoods! It's disgusting!!!

If in doubt, they kill it and sell it at the butcher's shop.

I've seen it! Lack of hygiene at the Mateus supermarket in Cohama.
Cockroaches circulating on the floor, near the cash registers; rotten products at the market, I don't know how people take them home like that, without taking due care to check if the product is fit for consumption. The strategy is this, leave it there, because there are people who take it! And so it goes. It's disgusting!
