The Devín Cabin is located in a vineyard in Slovakia, costs €129 per night (depending on the month) and operates without an electrical grid. Discover the project that combines nature and technology.
A small structure of 20 square meters built over a vineyard in Bratislava, Slovakia, has become an international reference for compact architecture and self-sufficiency. Called the Devín Cabin, it can be rented by tourists for €129 a night (depending on the month) and surprises both for the sophistication of the project and for an unusual detail on the roof: a replica of the lunar footprint left by astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last human to walk on the Moon, in 1972. The project came from the offices of Ark-Shelter and Archekta, and was designed to operate year-round without any connection to the public electrical grid.
What fits in just 20 m²?
The natural question anyone asks when hearing “20 square meter cabin” is: but does anything fit? In the case of Devín, the answer is surprising. The architects developed smart space utilization solutions that transform every centimeter into functionality.
According to Casa Vogue, the interior includes:
-
Château Jardin Exto: the perfect synergy between luxury and architecture
-
From Elon Musk to Campos do Jordão, Boxabl’s compact modular house draws attention for combining quick construction, solar energy, lower cost, and a new discussion about housing in Brazil.
-
Austin creates an entire neighborhood for those who lived on the streets for years: a 51-acre community brings together micro-houses, gardens, a cinema, a market, a clinic, and transportation to rebuild lives with permanent housing.
-
Engineers want to carve through Africa with a giant canal to bring water from the world’s second-largest river to a dying lake on the edge of the Sahara Desert that has already lost 90% of its water.
- Bedroom in the mezzanine, accessed by a staircase embedded within a closet;
- Living room integrated with a fully equipped kitchen;
- Bathroom with concrete sink;
- Cellar for storage;
- Terrace with panoramic view over the vineyard.

The exact dimensions of the structure are 5.4 × 3.7 × 5.1 meters, and the module is slightly elevated from the ground — which reduces the impact on the soil and creates technical space under the floor to house a water reservoir and gas system.
The cabin that breathes with the environment
One of the most impressive aspects of the Devín Cabin is its ability to open up to the surroundings. Two side facades function as large foldable platforms: when opened, they form terraces and reveal extensive glass surfaces that eliminate any separation between the interior space and the vineyard landscape.
Sliding glass walls complete this integration. Inside, bio-based wood panels and ayous wood on the exterior facade create a cozy atmosphere — choices that contrast with the technological character of the project without creating aesthetic noise.
Living without relying on urban infrastructure requires careful engineering. The Devín Cabin solves this challenge with a hybrid system that combines three sources:
- Photovoltaic panels on the roof for solar generation;
- Batteries for storing the generated energy;
- Gas system as a backup for more intense demands.

Management prioritizes electricity for daily functions and activates gas only when necessary, adapting consumption to the climatic conditions of each season. Water is stored in reservoirs integrated into the raised floor, and the internal environment is controlled by intelligent ventilation, automated shading, and CO₂ and humidity sensors — ensuring comfort without waste.
The roof with history
The most striking detail of the Devín Cabin is on the roof. In tribute to astronaut Eugene Cernan (1934–2017), replicas of the footprints he left on the Moon were reproduced. A member of the Apollo 17 mission, Cernan made history as the last human to leave marks on the lunar surface in December 1972.

The rental advertisement describes the cabin as “an oasis of peace and natural beauty that emerged above the vineyards of Zlatý roh”, adding that “on the roof, you will find an artistic touch: a replica of astronaut Cernan’s lunar footprint, a story of bold dreams”.
This fusion of nature, technology, and historical memory is what sets the Devín Cabin apart from any other temporary lodging retreat in Europe.
