Agribusiness Sector, From January to September, Saw Increased Demand for Road Freight Compared to Last Year. The Sector Also Stood Out in Performance Compared to Industry and Retail
During the Covid-19 pandemic, agribusiness was one of the least affected sectors. This is supported by factors such as export demand and the devaluation of the real against the US dollar, which increased the competitiveness of agricultural products. As a result, the demand for road freight in the sector increased by 9.6% from January to September 2020 compared to the same period last year.

This result is also due to the abundant harvest in the country in 2019/20, estimated by the National Supply Company (Conab) at 257.7 million tons.
Considering only the month of September, freight demand increased by 4.6% compared to the same period in 2019, said Repom, which is a brand that offers management and payment solutions for Edenred Brazil and its outsourced fleet. According to Repom, agribusiness also avoided an economic downturn in April and May, which marked the peak of restrictive measures and recorded a peak in movement during that period.

Repom also highlighted that the performance of agribusiness surpassed that of the industry and retail; however, according to IFPR, the recovery of economic activity in Brazil has also supported these sectors. The industrial and retail sectors have a high demand for freight transport in the first nine months of the year, with a 8.4% increase in the first nine months compared to 19.9% in September.
Thomas Gautier, head of Road Market at Edenred Brazil, said, “The significantly positive pace of industry and retail confirms that the downturn in the sector has been overcome. The daily pace rate in September surpassed pre-pandemic levels by 25%, and compared to April, the worst month of the year in emissions, the recovery was 40 percentage points.”
