Despite the decline in the automotive industry’s numbers, the outlook remains favorable for fleet renewal for trucks. At least that is Mercedes’s assessment, which has just closed a contract with the beverage giant Ambev.
“The pandemic has only shown that some sectors remain extremely important. Beverages and transportation are among them,” says Roberto Leoncini, vice president of Mercedes in Brazil.

According to the executive, Ambev already has a structured fleet renewal process, mainly because these are vehicles that cannot stop. “We managed to strengthen this partnership with the company, but we also have other partners in the beverage sector and we have a specialized team to serve them.”
The contract with Mercedes provides for the delivery of 140 medium Accelo trucks, nearly 280 semi-heavy Atego trucks, and about 30 extralight trucks from the Axor line. The first units began to be delivered in August, and all the vehicles will arrive at Ambev’s partners by October.
Leoncini states that for some operators, the manufacturer is negotiating maintenance plans within the client. The brand has about 185 dealerships and more than 100 dedicated service contracts with clients. “We do not just deliver the truck. This is important because the service adds fleet management.”

Facing the Crisis
The vice president of Mercedes reports that maintaining the basic Selic interest rate at the lowest historical level contributes to increasing sales in the sector, although the recovery is still slow. Truck registrations in August fell by 15.23% compared to July, to 8,072 units. Compared to the previous year, the decline was 15.73%. In the accumulated total from January to August, there was a retracement of 15.63%, to 55,213 units.
“We have seen an important movement of fleet renewal. There are clients who are reducing the number of vehicles and increasing the frequency of replacements. This is also logistics intelligence,” says the executive. “We are in the best moment of the basic interest rate, with the BNDES becoming a protagonist in sector sales again.”
He adds that this is also a good time to buy used vehicles, which boosts market dynamics.
