Giant Cargo Plane An-124 Was Seen Flying Over The Ukrainian Capital in A Daring Operation That Raises Questions About Its Origin and Destination Amid The War.
An unexpected and mysterious flight over the skies of Kyiv, Ukraine, caught the world’s attention. A giant cargo plane Antonov An-124 was filmed flying over the capital, whose airspace has been strictly closed to civilian flights since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. The event generated a wave of speculation and celebration among Ukrainians, along with criticism from the Russian side.
The big question lingering in the air is: where did this aircraft come from, and how did it manage to take off and cross the country safely? Answers are beginning to emerge and point to a daring rescue operation.
The Escape of A Sleeping Giant
The most likely theory, confirmed by Ukrainian sources, is that the An-124 was held at the facilities of the manufacturer Antonov, at Hostomel Airport, near Kyiv, since the beginning of the war. The aircraft survived the initial attacks that destroyed the same airport and the iconic An-225 Mriya, the largest plane in the world.

After more than two years grounded, the plane was prepared for a risky evacuation mission. Satellite images from the week before the flight already showed movement of the aircraft in the yard, indicating that an operation was underway.
The Silent Flight to Germany
To avoid detection by enemy air defense systems, the Antonov An-124 took off and flew over Ukrainian territory with its transponder turned off. The equipment that sends out the plane’s location was only activated when the aircraft was approaching Polish airspace.
Flight tracker data recorded the cargo plane already in western Ukraine, safely making its way through Poland to its final destination: the city of Leipzig, Germany. This became the new hub of operations for Antonov Airlines after the onset of the conflict.
Russian Criticism and The Significance of The Operation
The success of the operation generated reactions. Russian military channels expressed surprise and criticism, questioning how an aircraft with such a large radar signature managed to fly without being detected. This raises doubts about the effectiveness of Russian monitoring and suggests possible gaps that could be exploited by the Ukrainian Air Force.
For Ukraine and the global aviation community, rescuing an intact An-124 is a significant victory. The fleet of these giants is a vital source of revenue for Antonov and plays a crucial role in transporting heavy cargo and global humanitarian aid. Saving another one of these planes, especially after the loss of the An-225, is a symbol of resilience and a logistical asset for the country.
