After 23 years revolutionizing communication through online calls, Microsoft officially announced that Skype will be disabled on May 5, 2025. Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for US$ 8.5 billion and has since integrated various features into the service. However, the rise of new communication platforms and the need for modernization led the company to make a radical decision: to retire Skype and concentrate its efforts on Microsoft Teams.
Jeff Teper, president of collaborative apps and platforms for Microsoft 365, explained that this change aims to accelerate innovation and make the communication experience more efficient. In an interview with TechCrunch, Teper emphasized that “focusing all efforts on Teams will allow for faster innovation.”

Launched in 2016, Microsoft Teams already showed signs that it would replace Skype. How Will The Transition Be For Skype Users?
To minimize the impact of Skype’s end, Microsoft assured that the migration to Teams will be simple and organized. The company announced several measures to facilitate users’ adaptation to the new online call service:
- Login And Automatic Migration: Skype users will be able to access Microsoft Teams using the same credentials, and their contacts and conversations will be automatically transferred.
- Transition Deadline: Skype will continue to operate until May 5, 2025. After this date, user data will be retained until the end of the year.
- Export Tool: Microsoft will provide an option to download conversations and files before the definitive shutdown of Skype.
- Phone Calls: Phone call subscriptions for landline and mobile numbers will end on April 3, 2025. However, users who still have credits after this date will be able to use them temporarily through a dial pad available in the Skype portal and Microsoft Teams.
With this approach, Microsoft aims to avoid disruptions for the millions of Skype users around the world.
The Decline Of Skype: From Market Leader To Obsolete Service
Skype peaked in the 2000s and became synonymous with online calls. In 2013, the platform reached an impressive 300 million active users. However, with the advancement of technologies and the rise of competitors like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Google Meet, the service began to lose ground.
The decline in Skype users became evident in recent years:
- In 2023, Microsoft revealed that Skype had about 36 million daily users, a number far lower than WhatsApp, which surpassed 2 billion active users in 2020.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020, Skype experienced a temporary spike of 70% in daily users, reaching 40 million. However, this recovery was temporary, and the growth of Zoom and Microsoft Teams ultimately left Skype behind.
The main feature of Skype, phone calls to landlines and mobile numbers, has also lost relevance. With the popularity of mobile data plans and free messaging apps, this function has become obsolete, contributing to the service’s decline.

The shutdown of Skype reflects the transformation of the digital communication market. Microsoft believes that Teams can meet both personal and professional communication needs, establishing itself as a unified service.
