Since World War I, the dominance of the skies has become a decisive factor in military conflicts. Currently, the most powerful air forces in the world have stealth fighters, advanced drones, and hyper-technological aircraft, making air control a crucial element of global defense.
According to Global Firepower, the United States is, unsurprisingly, the largest air force in the world, possessing more aircraft than several powers combined. However, countries like China and Russia continue to heavily invest to reduce this advantage and increase their military influence.
United States Dominate The Skies With The Largest Fleet In The World
The United States has an impressive fleet of 13,209 aircraft, a number far greater than that of Russia (4,255) and China (3,304). This dominance is driven by huge investment in defense, exceeding US$ 800 billion per year.

Russia, which for a long time was the second-largest air power, has a fleet of 4,255 aircraft but faces significant challenges. With outdated equipment and lack of modernization, many of its aircraft are outdated, compromising their operational capacity.
China, on the other hand, has been standing out in modernizing its air force. The country already has 3,304 aircraft and continues to invest in advanced models such as:
- J-20 (fifth-generation stealth fighter).
- J-15T (naval version to operate on aircraft carriers).
- J-34A (fighter in development).
The Chinese government has invested billions to close the military gap with the U.S., focusing on the production of next-generation fighters, drones, and stealth systems.
The Military Growth Of Other Powers
Besides the three major powers, other countries are expanding their air forces:
- Japan: is modernizing its fleet with upgraded F-15s and F-2 fighters, in addition to investing billions in new stealth technologies.
- United Kingdom: seeks to maintain its global relevance with the development of Tempest, a new sixth-generation fighter.
- South Korea: continues to expand its aerial capabilities with the KF-21 Boramae fighter and next-generation aircraft.
These investments show that, besides the quantity of aircraft, the quality and modernization of the fleet are essential for air superiority.
