Urban technology that rewards correct disposal advances in Ribeirão Preto with smart machines that convert recyclables into money, stimulate popular participation, integrate PIX payments, and strengthen selective collection with a direct impact on urban cleanliness and support for local social actions.
The City of Ribeirão Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, has put into operation three smart machines for receiving recyclables at high-traffic points, incorporating technology into urban daily life to encourage correct disposal and increase public engagement with sustainable environmental practices.
Known as EcoBox, the equipment offers R$ 0.10 per item correctly discarded and allows the user to accumulate values until reaching the minimum required for withdrawal, made via PIX when the balance reaches R$ 5, according to rules defined by the municipal administration.
Implemented last Thursday (23), the initiative is part of a set of actions aimed at expanding recycling, reducing irregular disposal, and strengthening selective collection, aligning technology, financial incentives, and environmental public policies in a single system.

Among the materials accepted by the machines are cans, disposable cups, and PET bottles, items of high circulation in daily consumption that, when correctly discarded, can be reinserted into the production chain through existing recycling processes in the municipality.
In addition to the possibility of financial redemption, the system also allows the user to allocate the accumulated value to the Ribeirão Preto Social Solidarity Fund, expanding the initiative’s reach by connecting environmental sustainability with direct support for local assistance entities.
How EcoBox machines work and payment for recyclables

By combining financial reward with material recognition technology, the system was structured to transform correct disposal into a more frequent habit, creating a direct relationship between individual action and immediate benefit for the citizen.
Each package inserted is identified by the equipment, which automatically registers the item and adds R$ 0.10 to the user’s balance, allowing progressive accumulation until the minimum value required for transfer via the digital banking system is reached.
According to the City Hall, withdrawals can be made via PIX starting from R$ 5, a value that corresponds, in practice, to the disposal of 50 valid items, provided that all are correctly recognized by the machines installed at the defined points.
According to Mayor Ricardo Silva, the proposal seeks to increase popular participation in environmental actions and stimulate behavioral changes in urban daily life through concrete and accessible incentives.
“Another innovation for our city. We want Ribeirão Preto to become increasingly clean, beautiful, and sustainable, and this is only possible with actions that encourage public participation,” he declared.
Strategic locations of EcoBox in Ribeirão Preto
To maximize the initiative’s reach, the first three units were positioned in areas with intense pedestrian traffic, chosen based on their potential for continuous use and the visibility of conscious disposal actions.
One of the machines was installed in Parque Curupira, near the entrance, taking advantage of the circulation of visitors engaged in leisure activities and contact with green areas, which favors the association between environmental preservation and daily behavior.

Another unit began operating at the Dr. Fábio Barreto Forest and Zoo, specifically in the snack bar area, where the consumption of disposable products tends to generate a constant volume of recyclable materials throughout the day.
The third EcoBox, on the other hand, was positioned at the Dra. Evangelina Passig Terminal, near the ticket office, a location marked by the continuous presence of public transport users and high circulation flow throughout the urban routine.
Based on the first expected results, the City Hall informed that the initiative will be expanded through the installation of two mobile units, which should travel through different regions of the city, including the central area.
Destination of recyclables and impact on selective collection
After collection by the machines, the recyclable materials will be sent to cooperatives already working in selective collection in Ribeirão Preto, ensuring that the waste returns to the productive cycle in an appropriate and organized manner.
This forwarding maintains integration with the existing system and helps strengthen the work of cooperatives, which play a fundamental role in the processing, separation, and correct destination of recyclable materials in the city.
At the same time, the initiative seeks to reduce irregular disposal in streets, squares, and other public spaces, a problem that generates environmental impacts and increases the need for resources allocated to urban cleaning.
When recyclable waste is improperly discarded, there is not only environmental damage but also a waste of public resources that could be directed to other priority areas of the municipal administration.

As highlighted by the Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Maintenance, Claudio Almeida, the proposal combines technological innovation and encouragement of conscious consumption as a strategy to promote behavioral changes.
“We need to encourage sustainable behaviors, and this initiative combines technology with conscious consumption,” he stated.
Partnership with company responsible for waste collection
The installation of the machines is the result of a partnership between the City Hall of Ribeirão Preto, through the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Urban Maintenance, and the Estre Ambiental, the company responsible for household and selective collection in the municipality.
Within this collaboration, the proposal is to make the disposal of recyclables more accessible and attractive, bringing the population closer to sustainability practices through practical solutions integrated into urban daily life.
With the planned expansion, the municipal administration intends to evaluate the performance of the mobile units in different regions, considering factors such as public adherence, volume of collected materials, and impact on urban cleaning.
The expectation is that the continuous use of technology will contribute to consolidating sustainable habits, increasing the efficiency of selective collection, and encouraging the reuse of materials on an increasing scale in the city’s daily life.
