BYD Announced the Development of Its New Electric Car Which Features 4 Motors, Called the BYD Yangwang U8. The Vehicle Arrives in 2024, Being One of the Main Competitors to Vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.
After much anticipation from consumers, BYD is revealing its luxury electric vehicle sub-brand. And the first model is the BYD Yangwang U8, an electric SUV expected to hit the vehicle market in mid-next year. With a more “boxy” style, quite robust and at the same time modern, the Yangwang U8 has impressive measurements.
BYD Develops Car with Four Electric Motors
The future model from BYD measures 5.3 meters in length and has a wheelbase of 3.05 meters. The new SUV will be available with 20-inch (50.8 cm) wheels and 275/60 R20 tires. Being a true sports utility vehicle, the U8 is built on a ladder chassis and uses a propulsion system specifically designed for off-road driving.
The model will feature four electric motors, two on each axle, generating 320 – 420 Nm of torque and 220 – 240 kW of power each, equivalent to over 1,000 horsepower combined, which is quite significant.

BYD announced that all models from its brand will feature a powertrain with four electric motors. Another highlight of the new electric car with 4 motors is its IP68 protection, which makes the SUV waterproof and able to float, as demonstrated by the manufacturer during its unveiling event. The BYD Yangwang U8 is based on a revolutionary platform called E⁴, which has not yet had details revealed.
BYD Yangwang U8 Will Be a Rival to the Mercedes EQG
The premium electric car from BYD has features such as driving modes for ice, snow, and sand, steerable wheels, and even a crab mode. The complete specifications for the model have not yet been disclosed by the company, but the multinational states that the model can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds.
With an estimated market arrival in 2024, the BYD Yangwang U8 is being promoted as a rival to the Mercedes-Benz EQG, the top off-road electric SUV that the German brand plans to launch in the same year.
The multinational also has ambitious plans for Brazil in the electric car segment, and reinforced last year its commitment to the country during the energy transition process to electric models. Almost 10 years after arriving in Brazil, BYD may undertake billion-dollar investments in a market that is currently undergoing a government transition that may focus on technologies that reduce CO2 emissions.
BYD Ends Year with Record Electric Car Sales
BYD set a new record for monthly sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in December. The manufacturer continued to expand its sales volume, despite many challenges related to a growing number of Covid infections in China and some manufacturing losses.
According to the company’s report released in December, BYD’s sales of passenger electric cars reached 234,598, a 153% increase compared to 2021.
The majority of BYD’s sales occur in China, while exports represent a small percentage of the total result. Both battery electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid sales have been above 100,000 units per month since October.
