Find Out How to Issue a Student ID for Free in 2026 Even Without College. See Who Can, Which Free Government Courses Apply, and Pay Half Price Legally All Over Brazil.

Want to pay half price? Then read this until the end. If you’re tired of paying full price for tickets at the movies, shows, festivals, games, or cultural events, the student ID remains the safest way to save money in Brazil. And no, you don’t need to be in college to issue yours.

Many people still believe that only those in school or university can have the document, but that’s not true. Today, free courses EAD offered by the government in partnership with federal institutes and universities also allow issuing a student ID, as long as everything is done the right way.

In this updated 2026 guide, you’ll understand how it works, who can issue it, which courses apply, which entity to choose, and the complete step-by-step to ensure your half-price admission without risk.

What is the Student ID and Why is it Mandatory for Half-Price Admission to Shows, Movies, Theaters, Festivals, Cultural and Sports Events?

The Student Identification Card (CIE) is the only document accepted nationally to prove the right to half-price admission.

According to the government, cinemas, theaters, shows, festivals, sports, and cultural events can only grant half-price admission to students who present a valid CIE, whether physical or digital.

How Long is the Student ID Valid?

This point generates a lot of confusion, so note this:

  • The validity of the student ID always extends until March 31 of the year following issuance
  • Example:
    • Issued in 2026 → valid until 03/31/2027
    • Issued in 2027 → valid until 03/31/2028

This happens because the student needs to prove every year that they are still studying, precisely to avoid problems.

Is the Student ID Valid for Public Transportation?

No. And this is very important. The student ID is NOT valid for buses, subways, or public transportation. It is exclusively for:

  • Cinema
  • Shows
  • Festivals
  • Cultural events
  • Sports events

Any different promise is incorrect information.

Who is Considered a Student?

The definition comes from the LDB of Guidelines and Bases of Education. CHECK IT OUT the official text of the LDB. Those considered students are:

  • Early childhood education
  • Elementary education
  • Secondary education
  • Tertiary education
  • Special education
  • Professional and technological education

And here comes the key point: You do NOT need to be in college. Professional and technological education courses, including free online courses, also qualify the student as a student for half-price admission.

Required Documents to Issue a Student ID

You will need three things:

  1. Official document with photo
    • ID card, driver’s license, or passport
  2. Facial photo
    • Neutral background
    • No sunglasses, caps, animals, or mirrors
  3. Proof of enrollment or registration
    • From the school, college, or valid EAD course

Check Below Government Platforms with Free Courses that Allow Issuing a Student ID

Official platforms linked to the MEC and federal institutions offer valid courses, such as:

Attention:

  • Language and basic computer courses are generally not accepted
  • Prefer courses with 30 hours or more
  • The proof of registration is already sufficient (you do not need to complete the course)

CIE or DNE, is it all the same? Why do UNE, UBES, and ANPG refer to the National Student Card?

In practice, yes, but with an important difference in who issues it.

  • CIE is the official name of the document provided by law
  • DNE (National Student Document) is a CIE specifically issued by UNE, UBES, and ANPG

These three entities are called standardizing student entities. They define the national model, such as color, layout, and security elements.

Because these entities centralized the issuance of the document in a single official DNE platform. This ensures:

  • National standardization
  • Digital certification
  • Greater control against fraud
  • Automatic acceptance at events

But be careful: the government does NOT say that only they can issue the student ID.

Can Other Entities Also Issue a Student ID?

Yes. And this is stated by the government. In addition to UNE, UBES, and ANPG, the Half-Price Law allows:

  • State and municipal student entities
  • Federations
  • Recognized student councils and gremios

to also issue student IDs, as long as they follow the national standard. Here enters the FESN – National Student Federation.

Who is FESN and Why Do So Many People Choose to Issue Through It?

The FESN is a student entity with over 75 years of activity, categorized as a state/municipal student federation, exactly as the law provides.

It issues the Student Identification Card:

  • Digital
  • Physical
  • With QR Code
  • With a digital verification certificate

After approval, you access your student ID through the DNE FESN App, available for Android and iOS.

According to the federation itself, the document meets all requirements, including the student attribute certificate required by the government.

And Now, Should You Issue Your Student ID Through FESN or UNE/UBES/ANPG?

FESN

  • Accepts professional education courses
  • Allows issuing a student ID digitally only (cheaper)
  • Physical + digital option
  • More flexible
  • You can issue your student ID through FENS through the official website.

UNE / UBES / ANPG

  • Usually require traditional school ties
  • Do not accept several vocational courses
  • Issuance generally more expensive
  • Physical mandatory
  • You can issue your student ID through the official DNE platform.

You can legally pay half price without spending much. The student ID remains the best way to save money and is now much more accessible.

With free government courses, you can issue a student ID legally, safely, and without complications. The secret is: Understand, choose valid courses, and issue through recognized entities.

The Student ID is Paid, but If You’re Short on Cash, the ID Jovem Can Provide the DNE for Free

Currently, the issuance of the student ID (CIE/DNE) usually involves paying an issuance fee plus shipping, which the student pays at the time of the request to guarantee half-price admission to shows, cinemas, and sports events.

This charge is part of the official issuance process carried out by authorized entities such as UNE, UBES, ANPG, or other federated ones, and is the most common rule followed in 2026.

In the past, there was an attempt to create a free model through government initiatives, but a provisional measure that would allow free issuance by the state expired in 2020, and is no longer in effect as an official alternative for free student IDs in the DNE/CIE standard.

I’m young and want to issue my student ID for free:

For those short on cash, the ID Jovem can be a real shortcut: it is aimed at young people aged 15 to 29, from low-income families, who are registered in CadÚnico (Unified Registry) and have updated data.

In practice, you need to have a NIS (Social Identification Number) that is valid and compatible with what is in CadÚnico — if there is a discrepancy, it is necessary to update it at CRAS.

The program is official and guarantees benefits such as half-price admission to cultural and sports events and also advantages in interstate transportation, according to the rules of the ID Jovem official service from Gov.br.

To request, the safest way is: first, confirm if your CadÚnico is okay (or update it at CRAS), because issuance depends on the base being updated. Then, you issue the document through the official channel — via the ID Jovem website or the Gov.br (Obtain the Young Identity Card) service — providing your data exactly as it is in CadÚnico (usually NIS, name, and date of birth).

And if your idea is to use this to request the DNE without a fee, the official DNE website itself advises opening a request and then emailing the request number and the image of your ID Jovem to the support indicated in the Student Document (DNE).

ATTENTION: Validate Your Student ID Before Going to the Event

Issuing the student ID is only part of the process. To avoid problems at the entrance of cinemas, shows, festivals, and sports events, it is essential to validate the document after issuance. Today, the half-price validation is done digitally, through QR Code or usage code, which checks if the student ID is active, registered, and has a valid digital certificate.

Doing this check takes a few seconds and ensures your student ID is ready for use, avoiding embarrassment at the entrance and guaranteeing the right to half-price admission without headaches.

Now I want to know from you: Did this guide help you? Have you managed to issue your student ID yet?
