The World of Electric Cars Continues to Innovate and, at CES 2022, Companies Brought Several New Features, Such as Models That Change Color and Eliminate Covid-19

As time goes by, vehicles have started to become gadgets, that is, a device like a gaming console, smartphone, tablet, ultrabook, or another electronic device. Proof of this is that the Detroit Auto Show, which has been held since 1899 in the former World Capital, left the nearly 120,000 m² of the Cobo Center empty, while its biggest exhibitors rushed to secure a spot at CES, on the other side of the country, in Las Vegas. At CES, several new technologies appeared, such as electric cars that can change color with a single touch and others capable of even eliminating Covid-19.

Not long ago, CES was the stage for launching games, new versions of operating systems, and autonomous vacuum cleaners. In this 2022 edition, it presents the avant-première of two of the most anticipated electric cars in the world today. Unfortunately, due to the significant rise in infections from the Covid-19 variant, Omicron, CES was emptied.

Out of 2,200 exhibitors, many retreated and transformed their conferences, which were supposed to be in-person, into remote forums. At this point, GM only joined Lenovo, Intel, Meta, Google, Twitter, TikTok, and Amazon, to name seven giants of the digital sector, who decided, prudently but at the last minute, to dismantle their booths.

As a result, although the fair opened its doors last Tuesday (4), it seems that the automakers’ departure trend is now irreversible for the foreseeable future.

BMW Brings Color-Changing Electric Cars

For those thinking about changing the color of their car but gave up due to the bureaucracy, BMW seems to have thought of a solution and presented a concept where the body completely changes color at CES 2022.

The system alternates the colors of the SUV between white, gray, and black. All through a simple command from the driver. According to the company, the bodywork of the model is covered with millions of microcapsules the diameter of a human hair.

After the driver selects the configuration, an electric field stimulates the capsules to rise to the surface of the bodywork. As their energy charges are different, each group reacts differently to this stimulus, thus changing the color.

Electric Cars That Eliminate Covid-19

In addition to color-changing electric cars and others, Marelli was awarded for developing a purification system (IAQ) that uses UV-A and UV-C lights, combined with a titanium dioxide filter, to eliminate bacteria in the cabin and even the Covid-19 virus.

Meanwhile, Bosch showcased an intelligent sun visor, which is a Virtual Visor that identifies the driver’s eye position, darkening the part of the windshield where light could reach them.

Valeo, a supplier for the automotive industry, presented the third generation of its LiDAR autonomous driving system, which can reconstruct 3D images of the environment around the model at a speed of 25 FPS and with a resolution of 4.5 million pixels.
