Reports from Sochi officials indicate that Roberto Moreno may have implemented the use of artificial intelligence for decisions on logistics, training, and market, including a trip with athletes up to 28 hours without sleep; the Spanish coach denies using ChatGPT to prepare matches or select players.
Reports from Sochi officials, the Russian football team, suggest that coach Roberto Moreno may have implemented the use of artificial intelligence for routine decisions, logistics, and market at the Russian club, while the Spanish coach denies using ChatGPT to prepare matches, define line-ups, or select players.
According to a report from O Globo from January this year, artificial intelligence became central to Roberto Moreno’s crisis at FC Sochi, following reports that the Spanish coach may have used ChatGPT to plan training, trips, and signings in Russian football. He denies having used the tool in this way.
Decisions with artificial intelligence became the focus
Moreno, 48, took over Sochi in 2023, after stints with Granada, Monaco, and the Spanish national team. The club was relegated in 2023-24 and played in the Russian second division in 2024-25.

During this period, officials reported that the coach intensified the use of artificial intelligence to organize routines. The internal assessment was that strategic decisions became overly dependent on technology.
The most cited case involved a trip to face SKA-Khabarovsk. Former sports director Andrei Orlov stated that Moreno presented a schedule made with the help of ChatGPT, with players up to 28 hours without sleep.
Orlov said he questioned when the athletes would rest. The activity was not carried out, but the episode caused discomfort among the team, who found it strange to wake up at 5 a.m. to train at 7 a.m.
ChatGPT may have entered the market
Artificial intelligence may also have been used in hiring decisions. Orlov reported that Moreno compared three forwards with the support of ChatGPT, which allegedly indicated the Kazakh Artur Shushenachev.
Shushenachev did not score goals in ten matches for Sochi and was transferred the following season to FC Aktobe. For the former manager, the problem was not using the tool, but making it a central reference.
Orlov stated that the Russian core was dissatisfied and that foreigners stopped trusting the coach’s ideas. He pointed out a lack of empathy with players and assistants.
Access to the elite did not prevent dismissal
Even with the return to the Russian first division, Moreno did not last long in the elite. He led seven matches the following season, earned one point, and was eventually dismissed from Sochi.
The coach rejected the presented version. Moreno stated that he never used ChatGPT or any artificial intelligence to prepare matches, define lineups, or choose players.
Before the Russian club, Moreno gained prominence in 2019 when he temporarily took over the Spanish national team. He qualified the team for Euro 2020 after Luis Enrique stepped down for personal reasons.
The case reignites the discussion about the limits of artificial intelligence in professional football. Comment on whether tools like ChatGPT should be controlled support or if decisions about training, rest, travel, and squad should remain in the hands of the professional coaching staff.
