President Jair Bolsonaro Determined That Federal Police, Navy, and MMA Investigate Causes and Responsibilities for Oil Residue on the Northeast Coast.
Over 100 tons of oil residue on the Northeast coast have been collected by teams from the environmental agencies Ibama and ICMBio since the beginning of September, reported the Minister of the Environment, Ricardo Salles, on Monday, October 7. According to Petrobras the material is crude oil not compatible with substrates extracted in Brazil and may have come from Venezuela.
The comment on Twitter was published after the minister visited Sergipe to inspect areas affected by the oil, which has spread along the Northeast coast since last month.

“Since September 2, the teams from Ibama and ICMBio, have been working with the 42 municipalities (impacted by the stains), the Navy, and other agencies to collect over 100 tons of oil residue,” wrote Salles.
The government of Sergipe declared a state of emergency in the municipalities affected by the oil. The measures were taken due to the emergence of a large oil stain on Artistas Beach, in Coroa do Meio. The beach was closed due to the presence of the material, which is toxic.
President Jair Bolsonaro ordered an investigation in a decree published on Saturday, October 5, regarding the causes and responsibilities of the oil spill that has been affecting the northeastern coast for a month.
In the order, Bolsonaro determined that collected data and the measures taken regarding the environmental issue be presented within 48 hours.
The investigation is to be conducted by the Federal Police, Navy Command, Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), and ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation).
The Federal Police opened an inquiry on the last day 2 to investigate the oil spill on the Northeast coast. The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in the state is also investigating the environmental disaster.
