The year 2019 stands out for oil and gas discoveries, which in all were 12,2 billion boe (barrels of oil equivalent), the highest volume since 2015, according to Rystad Energy (independent oil consulting services company and gas and business intelligence data that offers global databases, strategic advice and research).

In all, 26 discoveries were registered in the world in 2019, four of them by ExxonMobil in the Stabroek block, offshore Guyana. Also, in the same country, Tullow Oil made other discoveries, Joe and Jethro (exploratory blocks). The estimate is that in the country, recoverable resources are 1,8 billion boe, where 1,07 billion in assets are operated by ExxonMobil.
The biggest discovery of the year was made by BP, in Africa, in deep waters off Mauritania, with an estimated volume of 1,3 billion boe. Then comes Gazprom, discovering 1,5 billion boe in Russia's Kara Sea.
However, the 22% increase compared to 2018 in terms of volume has not yet been previously estimated, given that many of the high-impact wells did not obtain good results. According to Upstream analyst at Rystad, Palzor Shengda, more than 10 billion barrels estimated pre-drilling were not found.
The expectation for this year, 2020, is that discoveries will continue at an increasing pace.
