Detran Will Comply With A Court Decision That Extends Deadlines For Drivers License Processes. Nonetheless, 72 Thousand Records May Be Canceled Due To High Demand And Lack Of Progress From Candidates At Some Stages. The Measure Seeks To Mitigate Losses, But Raises Concerns About Mobility And Organization Of The Drivers License Processes In The State.
A court decision may change the reality for thousands of candidates for driver’s licenses in Santa Catarina, and the impact promises to be significant.
With over 72 thousand CNH (National Driver’s License) processes potentially subject to cancellation, the State Department of Traffic (Detran-SC) finds itself facing a situation that reflects not only administrative issues but also the future of many potential drivers in the state.
The controversy arises after the Federal Court issued a preliminary injunction extending the validity period of processes in the Renach (National Driver’s License Registry) for candidates who have already completed the practical training hours.

The labor shortage has changed its face in Brazil: companies hire 80% more, but workers stay only 6.8 months in the job, the service market becomes a “revolving door,” and businesses spend increasingly more to train teams that soon leave.
The initial deadline required completion by December 31, 2024, but the court measure considered the risk that thousands of candidates could be harmed by the backlog in the traffic agencies.
Understand The Court Decision
The injunction was issued based on the principle of the danger of delay, pointing out that candidates who could not finalize their processes within the stipulated timeframe would be severely harmed.
According to Detran-SC, there are currently 106,685 records in the Renach affected by the situation.
This high demand, driven by the overload in traffic agencies, has created difficulties for many candidates to advance in the required stages for the issuance of the CNH.
The court decision recognizes that extending the deadlines is essential to mitigate the negative impacts.
However, even with the measure in effect, Detran-SC announced that there will be a significant volume of cancellations, especially for those who have not completed the necessary stages of the process.
Anticipated Cancellations
Detran-SC estimates that approximately 66,614 records will be canceled due to being in the initial stages of the process, that is, even before the practical course is conducted.
Another 1,923 records are expected to be invalidated, considering candidates who intended to obtain category A or B and who did not show results in the vehicle driving practical course.
Furthermore, 3,617 records of candidates for category AB will be canceled for failing to present results in any of the required categories.
Detran emphasized that compliance with the court decision will be strict, respecting the terms established by the Federal Court.
Impact On Candidates
The anticipated cancellations raise concerns among candidates who depend on the CNH for professional and personal matters.
According to the agency, the high repressed demand in traffic agencies originates from the increase in the number of people interested in obtaining a license, coupled with the administrative difficulties faced in recent years.
Candidates in the more advanced stages of the process will have their deadlines extended, allowing completion without immediate risk of cancellation.
However, those in the initial stages or who have not made significant progress will be directly impacted.
The Reaction Of Detran-SC
According to Detran-SC, the agency is committed to ensuring that the processes are conducted fairly and transparently.
In a statement, it highlighted that the court decision is an opportunity to adjust the workflow and meet demand more efficiently.
Additionally, the institution reinforced the importance of candidates regularly monitoring the status of their records in the Renach to avoid unpleasant surprises.
What Happens Now?
With the deadline extended, candidates who have already completed the practical hours can breathe easy, as long as they complete the remaining stages within the newly established period.
However, those who have not started or who have not made significant progress will face the cancellation of their processes.
In a context where urban mobility increasingly depends on valid licenses, the decision of Detran-SC and the Federal Court underscores the need for planning to avoid similar situations in the future.
How To Monitor The Process And Avoid Cancellations Of The CNH
Detran-SC recommends that all candidates regularly access the Renach system to check the status of their records.
Furthermore, communication with driving schools and attention to the stages of the process are essential to ensure successful completion.
