Petrobras Vessel, the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré Will Arrive at the Búzios Field, Marking the Beginning of High-Capacity Production in the Pre-Salt.
On Wednesday (07/31), the platform vessel FPSO Almirante Tamandaré left the CMHI shipyard in China and began its journey to Brazil. This floating unit, of the FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) type, is scheduled to be the first high-capacity unit installed in the Búzios field in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin. The arrival of the FPSO marks an important step in the expansion of Petrobras’ oil and gas operations.
First High-Capacity Unit in Búzios
The FPSO Almirante Tamandaré can produce up to 225,000 barrels of oil per day and process up to 12 million cubic meters of gas daily.
This milestone represents a significant advancement in the Búzios field, which is already known for its robust production.

The platform will integrate the consortium responsible for the field, which includes Petrobras as the operator, in addition to the Chinese companies CNOOC, CNODC, and PPSA, which manages the production sharing contracts.
With the arrival of FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, Petrobras expects to increase production capacity in the field, which has already reached the mark of 1 billion barrels of accumulated oil as of March this year.
This number was achieved with the contribution of the five existing units: FPSOs P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77, and Almirante Barroso.
FPSO Technology
The FPSO Almirante Tamandaré is not only a significant addition to Petrobras’ production capacity but also represents an advancement in sustainable technologies.
The platform is equipped with technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One of the main features is the closed flare, which minimizes the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere.
Additionally, the FPSO has systems for utilizing the heat generated, reducing the need for additional energy.
Another innovation is the technology for removing CO₂ from the produced gas. The CO₂ is then injected back into the reservoir, a practice that contributes to the decarbonization of production.
These measures align with Petrobras’ commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
Expectations for the Búzios Field
Renata Baruzzi, Director of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation at Petrobras, highlighted the importance of FPSO Almirante Tamandaré for the evolution of the Búzios field.
According to her, the new unit represents a significant advancement in production, with the implementation of technologies aimed at decarbonization, a central objective for Petrobras in its operations.
“FPSO Almirante Tamandaré will be a key resource for the evolution of production in the Búzios field, already showing very positive numbers”, said Baruzzi.
The introduction of FPSO Almirante Tamandaré is part of a broader strategy by Petrobras to expand its operations in the pre-salt and increase oil and gas production.
The Búzios field, with its significant reserves, plays a crucial role in the company’s strategy to maintain and strengthen its position as one of the leading oil producers in Brazil.
Impact of FPSO on the Market and Future Production
The arrival of the platform vessel FPSO Almirante Tamandaré may also have a significant impact on the oil and gas market.
With the additional capacity to produce and process large volumes of oil and gas, Petrobras will be able to meet growing demand and explore new opportunities in the sector.
Furthermore, the implementation of sustainable technologies can strengthen the company’s position as a leader in responsible production practices.
The future of production in the Búzios field looks promising with the addition of FPSO Almirante Tamandaré.
The platform will contribute to expanding operations and support Petrobras in its mission to maximize oil and gas production while adopting environmentally responsible practices.
The company will continue to invest in new technologies and its capacity for innovation to face challenges and seize opportunities in the sector.
The departure of FPSO Almirante Tamandaré from the shipyard in China marks the beginning of a new phase for the Búzios field and for Petrobras.
With its advanced capacity and sustainable technologies, the platform has the potential to significantly increase production and reinforce the company’s commitment to decarbonization.
The advancement in the Búzios field not only highlights the importance of Petrobras in the oil and gas sector but also signals an important step towards a more sustainable future.
