Brazil Achieves 6th Highest Growth in the G20: GDP Rises 3.2% in 12 Months, but Loses Momentum in the 2nd Quarter
Brazil has once again gained prominence on the international stage by registering, over 12 months, the sixth highest economic growth among the major G20 powers. According to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Tuesday (2), the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) accumulated a 3.2% increase during the period. Despite the good performance, the second quarter of 2025 revealed a loss of momentum, with only a 0.4% increase compared to the previous three months.
Brazil in the Global Growth Ranking
The survey by the Secretariat of Economic Policy (SPE) of the Ministry of Finance compared the results of 16 countries that have already reported their numbers for the quarter ending in June. In this context, Brazil ranks ahead of economies such as United States (2.3%), European Union (1.5%), and Japan (1.3%), trailing only behind India, China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
For the annual total, the top rank went to India (6.8%), followed by China (5.2%) and Indonesia (5%). Brazil, with its 3.2%, secures a position among the countries that can still maintain growth, even amid high interest rates and global slowdowns.

The Weight of Monetary Policy
Experts indicate that the slowdown is directly related to the high-interest policy maintained by the Central Bank (BC) as a way to contain inflation. As explained by Rebeca Palis, Coordinator of National Accounts at IBGE, more expensive credit reduces family consumption and discourages investments, factors that naturally lower the pace of economic expansion.
This movement is typical of periods when controlling inflation becomes a priority. By reducing the demand for goods and services, monetary policy acts as a brake, but it also compromises the intensity of productive activity.
Outlook for the Next Quarter
The expectation of the Secretariat of Economic Policy is that the third quarter of 2025 will show even more moderate performance, with growth lower than that observed between April and June. The agency’s analysis highlights the impact of the rise in delinquency and the contraction in bank credit.
On the other hand, some factors may support the economy: the resilience of the labor market, the payment of federal precatórios, and the recent expansion of payroll credit for workers should keep part of the internal demand active, preventing a sharper decline in GDP.
Downward Bias in Annual Projection
The SPE has also revised its expectations for the year. The initial projection of a 2.5% expansion in 2025 now has a “downward bias” due to a more pronounced slowdown in the second quarter. According to the agency, the cumulative effects of monetary policy are expected to continue impacting economic activity in the coming months, requiring attention from both the government and the private sector.
With the global economy facing uncertainties and most powers advancing at a slow pace, Brazil seeks to balance growth and stability, remaining among the countries that can still present positive results within the G20, a bloc responsible for more than 85% of the global economy.

A economia vai bem, sim.
