Embraer Expanded A 29 Capabilities by Integrating Modern Sensors, New Guided Munitions and Datalinks That Allow the Aircraft to Identify and Neutralize Drones Effectively, Strengthening Its Role in Critical Missions Around the World.
Embraer announced the expansion of the A 29 mission portfolio by incorporating the fight against modern unmanned threats. The company took advantage of resources already available in the aircraft and added new sensors that allow for the effective and affordable tracking, identification, and neutralization of Unmanned Aerial Systems.
This update paves the way for current and future operators to integrate specific drone missions into the aircraft’s operational profile.
New Sensors Enhance Combat Capability
Embraer added specific datalinks to receive initial coordinates and target direction. The company also integrated the Electro-Optical Infrared sensor, used for tracking and laser designation.

Embraer’s View on Modern Challenges
The President and CEO of Embraer Defense and Security, Bosco da Costa Junior, stated that the company continues to expand the capabilities of the A 29 to respond to the most recent missions faced by various nations.
He emphasized that recent conflicts have shown the urgency of solutions to combat UAS, highlighting that the A 29 combines effectiveness and low cost in such operations. He also noted that the aircraft already fulfills various missions, such as close air support, armed reconnaissance, and advanced training.
Versatility and Robustness of the A 29 Super Tucano
The A 29 is a versatile turboprop, known for its robust design and ability to operate on unpaved runways and forward operating bases.
It has accumulated more than 600,000 flight hours and carries out missions that include air patrol, interdiction, joint strike control, border surveillance, and escort.
The aircraft has been selected by 22 air forces due to its combination of capabilities, operational flexibility, and reduced life cycle cost.
Integrated Technology and Ease of Operation
The aircraft is equipped with precise target identification systems, varied munitions, and a comprehensive communication suite. Its avionics man-machine interface systems enhance operational efficiency, while its robust structure allows it to operate without infrastructure. Maintenance requirements are reduced, ensuring high reliability, availability, and structural integrity.
Strategic Capability in Combating Drones
The segment focused on drone combat has the potential to further boost A 29 sales. Many medium-range drones fly between 150 and 200 km/h and are difficult to intercept by fighters whose stall speeds exceed these figures.
The A 29 has a stall speed of 148 km/h, with some sources indicating even lower values. It can stay airborne for up to 6.5 hours and operates with heavy machine guns and air-to-air missiles.
The low-cost operation and ability to operate from dirt runways reinforce its potential in scenarios such as the conflict in Ukraine, where long patrols along routes used to launch drones can make a difference.
