Litro de Luz Project and Fondation Nexans Empower 9 Quilombola Residents in Magé for Solar Installation, Promoting Access to Photovoltaic Energy and Human Development.
Professional training provided by the Litro de Luz Project in partnership with Fondation Nexans impacted the quilombola community in Magé, in Rio de Janeiro. This social initiative, part of the Nexans Group, a leader in cable systems and services, enabled 9 local residents to be trained to install a photovoltaic system at the Residents’ Association. This intervention not only provided access to solar energy but also promoted human development and sustainable photovoltaic energy in the region.
With this professional training program, the community acquired practical knowledge in renewable energy, ensuring more autonomy and sustainability. This type of qualification is essential to increase job opportunities and local economic growth. The technical training received by the residents is just the beginning of a lasting impact that will extend for generations. Therefore, it is evident that investments in training and human development are crucial for vulnerable communities.
After months of professional training, the residents of the Bongaba quilombola community, located in Magé, Rio de Janeiro, managed to assemble, for the first time, a photovoltaic energy system. This action is part of the partnership with Fondation Nexans, a social initiative of the Nexans Group, which financially supports non-governmental initiatives that promote access to electricity in disadvantaged areas, and the Litro de Luz Project, an organization present in more than 15 countries that seeks to improve the quality of life through sustainable lighting solutions, such as solar installation, and by encouraging residents to become agents of transformation.

Benefits of the New Technology for the Community
The installed photovoltaic generator, with a capacity of 5.18 KWp, is connected to the electricity grid and is expected to generate an average of 684 KWh per month. With this initiative, the entire community will benefit from the new technology. In the final class, of the nine students trained by the project, seven applied the knowledge acquired since April in theoretical classes and completed the installation of the photovoltaic panels at the Residents’ Association. During the practical class, 12 representatives from Nexans, including employees and family members, participated as volunteers, organizing recreational activities with children, such as body painting, toy donations, storytelling, costumes, and drawing.
Training and Professional Development of Participants
In addition to lessons focused on equipment and their technical aspects, such as solar installation, which totaled over 80 hours of in-person and online classes, the program included meetings on human development and the job market, also addressing some necessary certifications to work in the field, such as NR-10 (Electricity) and NR-35 (Work at Heights and First Aid), ensuring safety in electrical installations and services. The students also visited the Nexans Brazil factory to learn about the cable manufacturing process and participated in training sessions on Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance. Throughout the theoretical period, students were provided with internet plans for online classes as well as transport and meals for in-person classes.
‘This is a new step in the partnership that began last year aimed at bringing new opportunities to this region. We are focusing not only on the employability of participants but also on sustainability and the importance of using clean energy,’ highlights Caroline Luppi, General Manager of Human Resources at Nexans Brazil. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a new certification, expanding their professional possibilities and enriching their life experiences. The certificate delivery is scheduled for tomorrow, at a closing ceremony.
Continued Partnership and Local Impact
The partnership with the Litro de Luz Project, which began in 2022, was renewed in 2023, bringing new benefits to the Bongaba community, which received a lighting system through light poles, aiming for a more sustainable energy production. About 460 people were benefited from this action. Fondation Nexans, created 10 years ago, aims to financially support initiatives that provide access to electricity and light in disadvantaged areas, in addition to training, qualification, and studies in energy and the environment. To date, the foundation has supported 158 projects from 67 NGOs in 38 countries, benefiting more than 2 million people.
