An Impressive Discovery! This Is the Second Largest Diamond Ever Found, Weighing An Incredible 2,492 Carats. See the Details of This Rare Gem.

Last year, a diamond weighing 2,492 carats was discovered at the Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana, by the Canadian company Lucara Diamond Corp.

The stone, which is very impressive in size, was identified through advanced X-ray technology that allows for extraction without fragmentation, ensuring its integrity.

The technology used in the discovery was developed to detect and recover large diamonds without damaging them, allowing stones of this caliber to be extracted without compromising their quality.

This method has been widely adopted in mining to preserve the maximum value of precious stones found.

The Karowe Diamond Mine has already been responsible for other notable discoveries, reinforcing its significance in the global production of large diamonds. With this new discovery, the mine reaffirms its potential to continue revealing stones of exceptional value.

Largest Diamond in History

Only the Cullinan Diamond, found in South Africa in 1905, is larger, at 3,106 carats. The Cullinan was cut into several gems that are now part of the British crown jewels.

Before this new discovery, the largest diamond extracted in Botswana was a stone weighing 1,758 carats found in 2019, also at the Karowe Mine.

Botswana is one of the world’s leading diamond producers, with the sector accounting for about 30% of the country’s GDP and 80% of its exports.

The government proposed a law requiring foreign companies to grant 24% of their operations to local investors, unless the government opts for this participation itself.

Technology and Mining

Lucara Diamond Corp uses Mega Diamond Recovery technology to identify and preserve large diamonds. Technological advancements have allowed for the extraction of increasingly larger stones, which may lead to new discoveries in the coming years.

The ownership of African diamonds sparks debate. In South Africa, there are calls for the return of gems cut from the Cullinan, arguing that they were extracted during the colonial period. In Botswana, the government seeks to increase economic benefits for the population through new policies for mining.

The discovery of the 2,492-carat diamond reinforces Botswana’s importance in the mining industry. The use of advanced technology facilitates the extraction of larger stones and may lead to more discoveries in the future. The government aims to ensure that the wealth generated directly benefits the country.
