Partnership Between Petrobras and MIDR Aims to Contribute to Regional Development Through Oil and Gas Exploration in the Equatorial Margin.
The possible exploration of oil and gas in the Equatorial Margin, in the North region of Brazil, has been gaining new developments. In a recent meeting, the Minister of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), Waldez Góes, and the Petrobras representative, Giles Azevedo, discussed the challenges and opportunities to boost the economic and social growth of the region.
The meeting focused on establishing partnerships to strengthen territorial development while respecting local communities and the environment.
A New Exploration Frontier in the Equatorial Margin
The Equatorial Margin extends between the states of Amapá and Rio Grande do Norte and is considered the last major exploratory frontier for oil and gas in deep and ultra-deep waters of Brazil.

With the potential to transform the local economy, the exploration of these resources at the Mouth of the Amazon could generate significant investments and job opportunities.
Waldez Góes emphasized the importance of the partnership between the government and Petrobras to prepare the region for this new growth cycle.
“We coordinated a meeting to have a follow-up on various agendas, both regarding the environment and social and economic issues, knowledge, and preparation of people to work in this production chain in the future,” said the minister.
Investments and Impacts for the North Region
Petrobras plays a key role in executing the development policies for the Equatorial Margin, which includes initiatives beyond oil and gas exploration.
According to Giles Azevedo, special advisor to the company’s presidency, the investment strategy also aims to value regional resources, respecting biodiversity and traditional communities.
“We value regional resources, such as those found in the forest and on the coast. We support and help consolidate economic activities that are already characteristic of the region in a sustainable manner. We need to prepare the region to receive these investments, which are not small. The region requires special care due to its biodiversity and traditional communities,” Azevedo explained.
The joint action between Petrobras and MIDR aims to bring social programs and training professional programs to the local population, allowing workers in the region access to opportunities in the energy sector’s production chain.
Develop Amazon
The Develop Amazon program, set to be launched in 2025, is one of the main initiatives aimed at fostering growth in the region.
“The Develop Amazon has the prospect that all vocations, whether gas, oil, mining, forests, or fishing, are considered and integrated into the development process, as well as in the distribution of wealth and the improvement of quality of life,” said Waldez Góes.
With the possibility of oil and gas exploration at the Mouth of the Amazon, the preparation and structuring of the Northern states become a priority to avoid negative impacts and ensure that benefits reach communities.
“Its exploration, once authorized, requires, from today, a series of measures and preparations, in addition to already generating a series of opportunities. This will be a permanent agenda here at the ministry,” emphasized Góes.
Regional and Sustainable Development with the Exploration of the Equatorial Margin
The National Secretary of Regional and Territorial Development Policies, Adriana Melo, also participated in the meeting and highlighted the importance of aligning Petrobras projects with MIDR programs.
According to her, the exploration of oil and gas in the Equatorial Margin should be a driver of economic growth but focused on sustainability and improving the quality of life of the local population.
“Several MIDR development programs engage with this perspective of sector dynamization from the exploration of oil and gas, such as productive development with the National Integration Routes, the fishing route, wood, cassava, circular economy, etc. We also have interesting opportunities with the Intermediate Cities program, which has prioritized the immediate region of Oiapoque in the state of Amapá. In this region, biennial development agendas will be developed together with the new mayors,” said Adriana Melo.
Thus, the partnership between Petrobras and MIDR will be crucial to ensure that development occurs in a planned and balanced manner, benefiting both the economy and local communities.
The challenge now is to align exploration strategies with sustainability principles, ensuring that the region reaps the benefits of this economic advancement without compromising its natural and cultural resources.
