The Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Unit (FLNG) from Golar LNG, Gimi, Arrived at BP’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Project Located off the Coasts of Mauritania and Senegal.
The floating liquefied natural gas unit (FLNG) from Golar LNG, known as Gimi, was positioned at BP’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, situated off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal.
The FLNG Gimi was brought to the GTA field on January 10, 2024, departing from the Seatrium Shipyard in Singapore in November 2023. The arrival of the floating liquefied natural gas unit was an important milestone for the project.
Golar LNG informed BP, the project operator, about the arrival of the FLNG Gimi, which represents a significant advancement in the development of the GTA.

Iran said that the Strait of Hormuz is open, but in practice only 1 non-Iranian oil tanker managed to cross in 24 hours — before the blockade, 100 ships passed per day.
Upon completion of all preparatory activities, the FLNG Gimi will be maneuvered to the central dock and connected to the feed gas pipeline, commencing the production of liquefied natural gas.
Golar LNG and BP Agree on the Docking Location of the FLNG Gimi
Golar LNG and BP have agreed that the FLNG Gimi will dock off the coast of Tenerife while awaiting the completion of necessary preparatory activities.
FLNG Gimi: Home for the Next 20 Years
‘Golar is pleased to see that the FLNG Gimi has arrived at the GTA field off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal, its home for the next 20 years. We are excited to integrate the Golar FLNG facility with the GTA hub and to begin the next phase of our long-term relationship with BP and the GTA partners in LNG production’, said Karl-Fredrik Staubo, CEO of Golar LNG.
Importance of the Milestone Achieved in the GTA1 Project
‘This is a significant step forward for the global delivery of the GTA1 project in Mauritania and Senegal. Achieving this milestone safely is the result of great teamwork’, added Rahman Rahmanov, Vice President of Projects at BP for Mauritania and Senegal.
The GTA field is one of the deepest offshore projects in Africa, at 2,000 meters below the sea surface.
Details of the Gas Production Process
The project will produce gas from a subsea system in ultra-deep waters and a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel in medium waters, which will process the gas, removing heavier hydrocarbon components.
The gas will then be transferred to the GIMI FLNG at a coastal center located on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal. The FLNG facility is designed to deliver, on average, about 2.5 million metric tons of LNG per year. Total gas resources in the field are estimated to be around 15 trillion cubic feet.
Discovery and Agreement of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Project
Kosmos Energy discovered the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim field in 2015, and BP signed onto the project through an agreement with Kosmos in 2016.
