Tests on the Coast of Rio Grande do Norte Validate High-Precision Armament
To ensure total control of the operation, the launches took place in Maxaranguape, on the Potiguar coast, an area traditionally used by FAB for armament tests. Although the aircraft’s movement raised questions from the local population, the Air Force clarified that this was a planned and controlled action, focusing exclusively on technical tests.
The armament used included the Mk84 bomb, which weighs about 900 kilograms and has a high destructive power, as well as versions equipped with the Lizard 500 system. This Israeli-origin kit transforms conventional bombs into high-precision laser-guided armaments, allowing the pilot to hit specific targets with minimal margin of error.
In this sense, the tests evaluated not only the ground impact but also the exact moment of the bomb’s separation from the aircraft. This factor is critical, as aerodynamic phenomena can compromise the stability of the fighter immediately after the armament is released. Therefore, every detail was carefully analyzed to ensure the Gripen operates within the highest safety standards.
Operation Thor Analyzed Safe Separation and Stability of the F-39 Gripen
According to the general coordinator of Operation Thor, Colonel Aviator Alisson Henrique Vieira, the release of the armament occurs at the exact moment the pilot activates the command in the cockpit. However, this process involves complex variables that need to be fully understood before the definitive operational release.
“Sometimes, aerodynamic phenomena can occur that interfere with this process and create situations of insecurity or even damage to the aircraft. Therefore, everything is meticulously analyzed for validation, allowing progress safely until the release for operational use,” explained the officer.
Thus, the studies conducted during the campaign allowed for precisely mapping the aircraft’s behavior under different flight conditions, consolidating essential data for the real employment of the armament. As a result, FAB took another decisive step toward the full operational capability of the Gripen in ground attack missions.
Brazilian Pilot Makes History and FAB Consolidates Operational Capability
According to the Brazilian Air Force, all trials were conducted with the aircraft registered as 4100, belonging to the Gripen Flight Test Center, located in Gavião Peixoto, in the interior of São Paulo. From the cockpit of the fighter, Major Aviator Thiago Camargo, from the Institute of Research and Flight Testing (IPEV), commanded part of the test flights.
As a result, the officer became the first Brazilian pilot to launch bombs with the F-39 Gripen, a milestone considered historic for national military aviation. All launches were monitored in real time, with constant monitoring of the bomb separation, aircraft stability, and trajectory to impact.
At the shooting range in Maxaranguape, specialized FAB teams worked on the preparation of targets, coordination of missions, and image capture, in addition to the precise surveying of the impact point coordinates. This data will be used for final validations and technical adjustments, consolidating the Gripen as a fully integrated platform in the Brazilian arsenal.

It can lunch super precise laser guded bombs… but they still dont know how acurate they are..lol theyvneed to find all places where the bombs fall and calulate thevhit probability.
