Ministry of Infrastructure, in Meeting, Guaranteed to the Government of Pernambuco the Resumption of Autonomy of the Port of Suape within 60 Days
In a meeting held this Wednesday (the 4th), the Ministry of Infrastructure assured the government of Pernambuco that the process of regaining autonomy for the Port of Suape will be completed within the next 60 days, a project that recently presented new sustainability solutions. The drafting of the new delegation agreement for the return of autonomy in managing contracts is being finalized by the ministry, so that the Port of Suape will become the third public port in the country to obtain this credential.
According to the Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo Sampaio, the Port of Suape meets the necessary requirements for the return of its autonomy. The minister also highlighted the publication in the Official Federal Gazette (DOU) on April 28 that eliminated the Island of Cocaia from the physical limits of the ordered port of Suape. Due to this decision, it will become feasible to install a terminal for ore in the area, which will allow for the completion of the railway responsible for connecting the metal mines of Piauí to the pier of Pernambuco, spanning 713 kilometers.
Governor of Pernambuco Celebrates the Viability of the Railway and the Achievement of Resuming Autonomy of Suape
The governor of the state of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, highlighted that progress is being made on issues for which his government has fought for many years. According to him, the viability of the railway, as well as the resumption of autonomy of the Port of Suape, are essential achievements that will provide more jobs and development for the state of Pernambuco. In the meeting, held at the Ministry of Infrastructure, Câmara was accompanied by the president of the Port of Suape, Roberto Gusmão; the port’s Planning Director, Francisco Martins; and federal deputy Fernando Monteiro.

Pork fat discarded by Brazilian meatpackers becomes an unexpected solution to replace petroleum-derived greases and lubricants, reducing friction by 54% in laboratory tests and raising an alert in a US$60 billion global market still dependent on mineral oil.
Furthermore, Roberto Gusmão, president of the Port of Suape, also noted that, thanks to the recovery of autonomy, the port will regain the capability to manage studies, prepare bids, carry out bidding procedures, and celebrate contracts related to port leases more quickly and with less bureaucracy. According to the director, the Suape complex will also become responsible for approving expansions and densification of areas, as well as early extensions of ongoing contracts.
These responsibilities were lost by Brazil’s public ports in 2013, thus all administrative functions related to new investments in public ports began to be coordinated by the Secretariat of Ports (SEP).
Planning Director Links Recovery of Autonomy to Excellence in Management of the Suape Complex
The Planning and Management Director of the Port of Suape, Francisco Martins, stated that the resumption of the port’s autonomy is a process that has been ongoing for some time and that Suape has been fighting to achieve it. According to Martins, this is due to the achievement of the Port Authority Management Index, which demonstrates the excellence in port management and enabled its recovery. For him, all this is added to other good news that has been announced and will continue to be reported about Suape, thanks to well-defined strategic management.
Finally, Roberto Gusmão added that autonomy will provide greater speed to processes, making the Port of Suape even more competitive in attracting companies and new cargo, which will have a direct impact on the economy of Pernambuco and the creation of jobs and income for the people of Pernambuco.
