A fortune in video games, accumulated over decades, vanished in an instant – all due to a simple mistake. A mother, not realizing the true value of what she had in hand, threw away her son’s collection valued at an impressive half a million dollars.
In 2020, an employee at a game store in New York claimed to have lost a collection valued at over R$ 2.9 million after his mother mistakenly discarded the items. The collection included hundreds of old games and consoles, many of which were rare and in impeccable condition.
The information was reported by the site VG247, which specializes in games. According to the report, the collection contained over 500 games for the original PlayStation, with half of them still sealed.

The owner of the collection worked at J&L Games, a store popular among retro gaming enthusiasts. He decided to store the items at his parents’ house due to lack of personal space, believing they would be safe there. However, the mother did not recognize the value of the collection and, while cleaning the garage, ended up discarding everything.

After the story became public, some collectors questioned the estimate of US$ 500,000 for the lost collection.
However, recent cases show that old games can reach high prices on the market. In an auction, a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Nintendo 8 Bits was sold for US$ 156,000. Another sealed edition, this time of Pokémon Red for Game Boy, reached US$ 84,000.
If the discarded collection included rare items like these, the value could indeed reach the figure disclosed by the owner. For collectors, the condition and provenance of the items are essential factors in valuation.
