A year ago, Magalu launched the first trainee program exclusively for black individuals, aiming to increase the representation of black and brown people in leadership positions (from management upward). The trainee program was chosen as it is the shortest path to form leaders. There were more than 22,000 candidates, and at the end of the process, 19 trainees were selected. One of the most important actions for advancing diversity at Magalu was conducting the first general internal census, which involved 77% of the approximately 40,000 employees. The survey, inspired by the IBGE census questionnaire, revealed the company’s racial-ethnic makeup. Previously, the company estimated this information based on qualitative diversity research that did not have a census character, focusing on employee self-declaration.

“Diversity is a value and is strategic for Magalu,” says Patricia Pugas, Executive Director of People Management. “Our intention is for both the general workforce and the company’s leadership to reflect the racial composition of the country, and a single exclusive program for black individuals would not be sufficient to achieve our goal.”
According to the National Household Sample Survey by IBGE, 56.1% of the Brazilian population is black. At Magalu, 51.8% of employees consider themselves black or brown, and among them, 41.5% hold leadership positions, according to a census* conducted by the company in 2021.
