Federal language platform gathers hundreds of classes, integration with gov.br, and promise of artificial intelligence, but remains without an official launch schedule even after initial announcement and change in command of the Ministry of Education.

Under development at the Ministry of Education, MEC Idiomas emerges as a proposal for a free application for teaching English and Spanish, but there is still no official definition on when the tool will be released to the public.

According to the Ministry’s Communication Advisory, the platform remains under construction, information confirmed this Friday (24), while the deadline initially announced by the government approaches its end without concrete updates.

Presented on April 1st by then-minister Camilo Santana, alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the project was announced as one of the Ministry’s digital bets to expand access to language teaching.

At that time, Santana declared that the service would be available “this month,” during his last official agenda in office before the change in the ministry’s command.

The very next day, Leonardo Barchini took over as head of the MEC, replacing Santana, who had held the position since 2023, marking an administrative transition amidst the launch of the new platforms.

Since then, while MEC Livros has rapidly advanced in operation and content expansion, the language application remains without a public launch forecast.

MEC Idiomas: how the free English and Spanish application will work

Designed as a widely accessible digital platform, MEC Idiomas will allow users to study English and Spanish for free through a login integrated with their gov.br account.

According to the information released, the system will feature approximately 800 lessons organized into six proficiency levels, following the international classification from A1 to C2.

Before starting, each user must take a placement test, a step that will serve as a basis for directing the most appropriate content to their prior knowledge.

Based on this initial diagnosis, the application will suggest a personalized learning path, structured with progressive activities and resources aimed at the continuous development of linguistic skills.

Among the announced differentials is the presence of an artificial intelligence agent, developed to assist in conversation practice and in clarifying doubts throughout the process.

Furthermore, the platform is expected to offer notifications, reinforcement content, and performance tracking tools, allowing students to constantly monitor their progress.

Investment and initial capacity of MEC Idiomas

In the plan disclosed by the government, MEC Idiomas will have an estimated annual investment of R$ 1.68 million, a value allocated to the maintenance, updating, and operation of the digital platform.

The initial projected capacity is 16,000 students per semester, which indicates a gradual implementation, with the possibility of expansion as the service consolidates and user demand grows.

Integrated into a broader set of digital initiatives, the application is part of the Ministry of Education’s strategy to expand access to free content through tools connected to the gov.br ecosystem.

Despite the expectations created by the announcement, the timeline was not met within the period indicated by Camilo Santana, which reinforces the lack of a defined launch date.

To date, the MEC merely states that the project remains under development, without detailing completed stages or setting a new deadline for its availability.

MEC Livros grows and expands free digital collection

In contrast to the language application’s situation, MEC Livros has advanced more rapidly since its launch, consolidating itself as one of the Ministry’s main recent digital deliverables.

The platform’s collection was expanded from approximately 8,000 to 25,000 works, as announced on Thursday (23), during a ceremony related to World Book Day.

Gathering national and foreign titles in digital format, the service allows free access upon registration, expanding the reading offer for different user profiles.

In the first weeks of operation, the volume of adherence was noteworthy, with hundreds of thousands of registrations made in a short period.

Latest data points to **586 thousand registered users**, while a previous survey indicated 566 thousand in 17 days, a variation that reflects continuous updates in the number of accesses.

With the platform already active, the trend is constant growth, driven by the expansion of the catalog and the ease of access to digital content.

Change in the Ministry of Education after platform announcement

The change in the leadership of the Ministry of Education occurred on April 2, just one day after the official presentation of the digital tools announced by the government.

With Camilo Santana’s departure, Leonardo Barchini assumed the position of minister, continuing the administration after serving as executive secretary of the portfolio.

A career civil servant at Capes, Barchini was already part of the MEC structure and began to lead educational policies at a time of implementing new digital initiatives.

Even with the change in command, MEC Idiomas did not have its schedule publicly updated, keeping the effective start of activities for interested users undefined.

As of the last official position disclosed, the application remains under development, with no forecast for launch in digital stores or direct release through the gov.br environment.

Thus, only the general guidelines of the project remain known, including course structure, use of artificial intelligence, and estimated annual investment.
