Teams face severe conditions in one of the most dangerous underwater operations ever recorded in the Maldives, as searches continue mobilizing local forces and international experts
A new tragedy has further deepened the drama involving the five missing Italian divers in the Maldives. A rescue military officer died after directly participating in the search operation in an underwater cave considered extremely dangerous by local authorities.
The information was released by “UOL Notícias”, based on data published by NBC News, Associated Press, and the Italian agency Ansa. According to the Maldivian government, the military officer Mohamed Mahudhee was part of one of the rescue teams operating in the Vaavu atoll, a region globally known for technical diving and deep caves.
However, after returning from the underwater mission, the rescuer was in critical health condition. Soon after, medical teams took him to a hospital, but he did not survive.

According to the first official information, Mahudhee suffered a severe underwater decompression accident. This type of situation occurs when a diver ascends rapidly to the surface. As a consequence, nitrogen gas bubbles form in the blood and body tissues, causing severe damage to the organism.
Moreover, the death of the military officer increased the tension surrounding the operation. After all, the teams continue to operate in an area that even experienced divers avoid accessing.
Deep cave challenges even specialized divers
The searches are taking place near the island of Alimathaa, located in the Vaavu atoll. The region attracts divers from all over the world. However, at the same time, the location has extremely complex and hard-to-access underwater caves.
According to the Maldivian presidential spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, not even highly trained professionals enter the area easily.
“The cave is so deep that even divers with advanced equipment avoid approaching,” he stated.
So far, the teams have located only one body, which was approximately 60 meters deep. Meanwhile, authorities believe that the other four divers remain inside the same submerged cave.
Besides the extreme depth, bad weather has also greatly hindered the rescue efforts. On Thursday, the teams temporarily halted the searches due to unfavorable weather conditions and the yellow alert issued in the region.
Even so, this Friday, boats, aircraft, and specialized divers resumed the operation. Additionally, the Maldivian government is considering the possibility of requesting international assistance.
An Italian specialist is already directly assisting the work alongside local forces. Meanwhile, the Italian ambassador is personally overseeing the operation in Malé, the capital of the Maldives.
Who were the missing Italian divers
The authorities have confirmed the identities of the five victims involved in the diving accident that occurred on Thursday.
Among the missing are Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of Ecology at the University of Genoa, and her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, a Biomedical Engineering student.
In addition to them, Muriel Oddenino di Poirino, a researcher from Turin, Gianluca Benedetti, and Federico Gualtieri, both diving instructors, are also missing.
Federico Gualtieri had recently completed his training in Marine Biology and Ecology at the University of Genoa.
According to initial reports, the group was conducting a morning dive near the island of Alimathaa. However, the divers did not return to the surface by noon, which immediately alerted local authorities.
Investigations attempt to discover causes of the underwater tragedy
The police of the Maldives and the Rome Prosecutor’s Office have already started investigations to understand what caused the accident.
So far, the authorities have not yet released an official cause for the tragedy. However, investigators are analyzing factors such as weather conditions, the equipment used, and the natural risks of the underwater cave.
Additionally, experts are assessing whether the group encountered unexpected difficulties during the underwater exploration.
The Maldives form an archipelago with 1,192 coral islands spread over approximately 800 kilometers in the Indian Ocean. The country has become one of the most sought-after destinations on the planet for recreational and technical diving.
Even so, experts constantly warn about the extreme risks of deep cave dives. After all, this type of activity requires advanced training, specific equipment, and strict safety protocols.
Currently, local authorities are already treating the episode as the worst diving accident in the history of the Maldives.
