What Changes with the Arrival of the New E30 Gasoline
Starting in August 2025, Brazil will begin a new phase in the fuel sector with the arrival of the E30 gasoline, which raises the proportion of anhydrous ethanol mixed with regular gasoline from 27% to 30%.
The change, approved by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), brings as its main novelty the increase in the fuel’s octane rating, from 93 to 94 RON (Research Octane Number), in addition to changes that promise to directly impact vehicle performance and the national energy scenario.

According to automotive engineering specialists, the RON index, used internationally to measure a fuel’s resistance to detonation, indicates how much gasoline can withstand compression before spontaneously exploding in the engine.
Gasolines with higher octane ratings, like E30, allow engines to operate more efficiently and safely, reducing the risks of combustion failures and optimizing energy consumption.
The Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering (AEA), which monitors tests of the new gasoline, highlights that the octane adjustment benefits mainly flex cars, which are predominant in the country.
The association’s fuel director, Rogério Gonçalves, states that “raising regular gasoline from 93 to 94 RON will be very positive for flex cars”, as these vehicles have electronic systems capable of automatically adjusting the engine’s compression ratio according to the detected fuel.
The gain of one percentage point, even if it seems small, can make the engine’s operation smoother and more efficient.
Ethanol at 30%: Impact on Consumption and Technological Compensation
However, the incorporation of more ethanol into the mixture presents challenges and noticeable changes for the consumer.
Anhydrous ethanol, derived from sugarcane, has a lower calorific power than gasoline, meaning it releases less energy per liter during combustion.
For this reason, the increase to 30% may cause a slight reduction in vehicle autonomy, especially in urban routes.
Experts assess, however, that the higher octane rating acts as a “technological trick” to compensate for part of this loss by allowing the engine to operate under more favorable conditions.
Economic and Environmental Effects of Gasoline with 30% Ethanol
From an environmental and economic perspective, the Federal Government justifies the increase in the ethanol mixture as a strategy to reduce reliance on gasoline imports, as Brazil is self-sufficient in sugarcane production but still needs to import significant volumes of petroleum derivatives.
According to official estimates, the transition from E27 to E30 could prevent the import of 760 million liters of gasoline per year, while simultaneously stimulating the sugar-alcohol sector, with an expected growth of 1.5 billion liters in the national ethanol production and investments exceeding R$ 9 billion.
Furthermore, the measure aligns with environmental guidelines to reduce vehicle emissions of polluting gases, as indicated by tests from the ANP itself.
Distribution: When Will the New Gasoline Arrive at Gas Stations?
Drivers should pay attention to the arrival time of the new fuel at gas stations.
Although the authorization for commercialization will take effect from August 1, 2025, distributors will have a transition period to deplete stocks of current gasoline, which could mean a few weeks or even months until E30 is widely available throughout the national territory.
In more distant regions from production centers or with lower demand, this interval is likely to be longer.

Brazil Advances in Legislation and International Standards
Regarding technical specifications, the Brazilian market already adopts higher ethanol limits in gasoline compared to countries like the United States, where the E10 mixture (10% ethanol) is standard, and E15 is still expanding.
In Brazil, legislation allows for the possibility of raising the ethanol percentage to 35% in the next phases, as established by the Fuel of the Future Law (Law 14.993/2024), as long as there is proof of technical viability.
The ANP is already studying, in conjunction with manufacturers and research institutes, the impacts of this potential increase to ensure vehicle performance and system compatibility.
Advantages and Challenges for Engines and Maintenance
Another advantage of E30 gasoline, according to automotive engineers, is the greater stability of the mixture and the potential for more precise adjustments in the electronic management of engines.
This means that, in addition to meeting environmental standards, the fuel tends to reduce maintenance costs in the medium term by preventing issues like pre-ignition or excessive carbon buildup, especially in newer vehicles.
Changes Align Brazil with International Standards and Encourage Biofuels
On the international stage, the increase in octane rating brings Brazil closer to standards adopted in Europe, where fuels with greater resistance to detonation are common and considered essential for the efficiency of more modern and less polluting engines.
The increase in the ethanol content in gasoline also contributes to consolidating the country’s position as a global reference in biofuels, stimulating the development of new technologies and sustainable agricultural practices.
The sector’s expectation is that, with the E30 gasoline, Brazil will move towards an even cleaner energy matrix while strengthening its internal production chain and reducing costs associated with the volatility of the international oil market.
Experts emphasize, however, that each vehicle model may react differently to the new mixture, making it essential for drivers to monitor how their cars behave in the first weeks of using the new fuel.
