The New Project by Petrobras Will Be to Revitalize the Campos Basin in Rio de Janeiro, and Will Be the Largest Offshore Recovery Planning in the World
The Petrobras aims to reduce carbon emissions associated with the production of the Marlim and Voador fields in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro, by 60% as a result of implementing the revitalization project for this basin. Petrobras’ strategy consists of replacing the nine own platforms currently in operation in these two assets with two new FPSOs, floating units that produce, store, and transfer oil, and are equipped with technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The revitalization of the Campos Basin in Rio de Janeiro will be part of the largest project for recovering mature assets in the global offshore industry. With that, Petrobras aims to add more value to the Marlim and Voador fields in Rio de Janeiro by installing the FPSOs Anita Garibaldi and Anna Nery, which have the capacity to produce up to 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) together. The start of operations for the two platforms is scheduled for 2023.
To implement the new production projects in the Campos Basin in Rio de Janeiro, Petrobras will drill 14 new wells, relocating another 61. With the revitalization effort for the reservoirs, the expectation is to produce gains for the Rio de Janeiro.

Petrobras has incorporated low fugitive emission valves into the new platforms, technology to reduce vented gas from oil storage tanks, as well as other solutions focused on reducing carbon emissions, further supporting the environmental consciousness of the Marlim and Voador fields in Rio de Janeiro.
Maintenance in the Campos Basin Will Include Floating Hotels
So far, Petrobras has completed its shutdown campaign for maintenance services on the P-51 platform located in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro. It is now redirecting its efforts and investment to the ongoing maintenance and scheduled shutdown activities on the P-53 and P-43 oil and gas platforms, with completion expected this month.
Later in 2022, the company also plans to initiate the maintenance campaign on the P-48 and P-40 platforms. Thus, the UMS will be essential for accommodating workers and all necessary equipment for carrying out maintenance services in the oil and gas exploration areas.
In addition to investing in the acquisition and chartering of UMS for the campaigns, the Exploration and Production Unit of the Campos Basin (UN-BC) of Petrobras will use, starting in August 2022, a small accommodation vessel for smaller scope work, thereby ensuring even greater efficiency in services.
The US$ 220 million investment by Petrobras in UMS for the maintenance campaign of the Campos Basin fields will be essential for greater efficiency in services, as each unit can accommodate around 500 workers involved in the campaigns or scheduled shutdowns of the operational marine units.
Moreover, the floating hotels will connect to the platforms undergoing services via a bridge, thereby ensuring easier movement for workers.
